Helen was born on July 20, 1936 at Rosebud, SD, the second eldest child of Lester and Hazel (Swogger) Lamoureaux. When younger, she was mainly called by her middle name Lorraine. She grew up on the family ranch near Valentine.  Later she lived in Norfolk with her mom and siblings, and graduated from Norfolk High School.

She married Douglas Butterfield, to this union six children were born. The family moved often for Doug's work in the early years, living in New Jersey, California, Oregon and Iowa, before settling on a farm near Page.

Helen was an active farm wife and mother, involved with the children's 4-H, Scouts and school activities in Orchard, Page and O'Neill.

After raising her family, she lived for a time in Lincoln where she and her daughter Katy obtained their associate's degrees in social work.

In the 1980's, Helen relocated to Arizona. There she met Charles Hatfield and they married in 1995, residing in Apache Junction, AZ.

Helen had a gift for hosting fun get-togethers and they enjoyed a busy social life, including square dancing, the VFW, Elks, American Legion and Moose Lodges, and church activities. Charlie and Helen had been married 29 years before he passed away in February 2023.

Helen loved to travel, whether with Charlie or other family members. She also had adventures with friends, like when her Red Hat group appeared in the audience on The Price is Right. She had a happy nature and enjoyed the beautiful things in life. She was proud of her heritage as a member of the Rosebud Lakota Sioux tribe.

Helen was devoted to all her family, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.

Helen is survived by her four children; Mike (Melissa) Butterfield of Apache Junction, AZ, Bruce (Peggy) Butterfield of Broomfield, CO, Phillip (Natalie) Butterfield of O'Neill and Katy Butterfield (Jim Drab) of Apache Junction, AZ; one daughter-in-law Sandy Cornett of Cambridge; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; Charlie's family; one sister-in-law Rita Lamoureaux of Erda, Utah; one brother Steve (Linda) Standley of Hamilton, MT; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
