Atkinson ­— Gregory Stephen Vogel, 70, of Atkinson, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024 at Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson with a rosary.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson. Fr. Bernard Starman will officiate. Music will be provided by organist Terri Vrooman and soloist Bonnie Krysl.

Honorary pallbearers are all of Greg's co-workers and friends.

Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Atkinson.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Gregory S. Vogel, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Oct. 13, 2024, after a short but brave fight with lung cancer. He was born on Sept. 8, 1954, in Norfolk, to Elmer and Doris Vogel and lived a life filled with love, hard work and adventure.

Greg attended Saint Joseph's Catholic School in Atkinson until the eighth grade and then graduated from West Holt High School in 1972. He went on to the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1976.  

Starting his career as a real estate broker and appraiser, Greg eventually diversified his life by farming and starting his own gravel pit, Elkhorn Sand and Gravel, in 1994. He was still working there up until his passing.

On Aug. 16, 1975, Greg married Roma Smith and together they raised three daughters Megan, Nicole and Michelle, and welcomed 10 grandchildren into their family. Greg is now with one grandson in heaven watching over us from above.  

Greg was known for his big hugs and for being an incredibly supportive father and grandfather.

In 1999, Greg underwent a heart surgery that changed the course of his life. This defining moment reinforced his faith and transformed him forever. He showed everyone around him that it's possible to overcome challenges and adapt. His strong faith helped him face any situation, and he was never afraid of what came next.

He loved mornings and was an early riser, often encouraging others to get outside, enjoy some fresh air or take a nap and start over if they needed to. Greg was always there for his friends and family, making time for everyone and being a true friend.

He loved spending time outdoors, often going for walks in the fresh air with his black lab Millie, who he spoiled endlessly. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes, and he made several trips to Alaska to catch halibut and salmon. He could also be found fishing in local ponds, making those moments special with family and friends by making sure they had warm clothes. When he wasn't outside, he would often be found reading. He enjoyed books on science fiction and appreciated futuristic concepts and thinking differently.

Greg also really enjoyed the stock market. He loved teaching his kids and grandkids about money and investments, often handing them calculators to show them how to figure out returns on investments. He kept a close eye on the markets, with the TV always showing financial updates.

Manners were very important to Greg, and he made sure his kids and grandkids understood the value of good table manners. He believed that respect and gratitude were essential in life and even during his time in the hospital, he took the time to thank everyone who helped him. This thoughtful gesture reflected his belief that kindness and appreciation should never be overlooked, no matter the circumstances.

As we remember Gregory S. Vogel, let's celebrate a man who watched over his loved ones with care and guidance.  He was a loving husband, a dedicated father and a great friend, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness and unforgettable memories. May he rest in peace, knowing he will always be remembered and cherished by those he left behind.

Greg is survived by his wife Roma; three daughters Megan (Tyler) Mitchell and Nicole (Jeff) Kreitel, all of Atkinson, and Michelle Verzal of LaVista; nine grandchildren; six siblings Everett Vogel (Carol Ries) of Stuart, John (Chris) Vogel of Atkinson, Phil (Sarah) Vogel of Omaha, Carol Cruise of Bellevue, Kristi (Kelly) Cobb of Omaha and Laurie (Jim) Meuret of Brunswick; and one brother-in-law Gail LeMunyan of Grand Island.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson Deklan Kreitel and one sister Rosemary LeMunyan.
