The O'Neill Eagles Football squad is sitting at 4-0 after knocking off Ponca on Friday, Sept. 19, with a 69-0 win. The Eagles will travel this week to face a 1-3 Wayne club, whose only win was against Brownell Talbot 29-7. The Blue Devils lost to Roncalli Catholic 20-2, Cedar Catholic 55-7, and Loganview/Scribner/Snyder 40-7 last week. The Eagles took it to Ponca early when Porter Mathews took the kickoff back to the Ponca endzone to start the battle 7-0. Braxen Eichelberger brought home the second score for the Eagles. Eichelberger had three carries for 40 yards and two rushing touchdowns for the Eagles. The Indians struggled with the Eagles' running game, which gained 383 yards and scored five touchdowns in the second quarter. The Eagles scored 35 points in the quarter to lead 49-0 at halftime against the Indians. Grady Welke had two touchdowns in the period and carried the ball eight times for 110 yards, averaging 13 yards per carry; Turner Heiss had the next score for the Eagles. Heiss ran the ball four times for 25 yards and the one touchdown. Heiss threw nine times for five completions and three of those for touchdowns; Mathews got his second score on the night on a pass from Heiss, and then in the next series of plays got an interception to put the Eagles on the Indians 13-yard line to set up Welke for the next score. The next score came after Ian Yates got an interception to put the Eagles in a good position for a Nate Brown 42-yard touchdown before the half. The Eagles took their foot off the gas in the second half, seeing some of the non-starters see time on the field. Ryker Sudbeck took a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third, and then Ryder Kelly sent a touchdown pass to Eichelberger for the second score of the third. Kelly ran in the final score of the game on a 10-yard run. Defensively the Eagles were led by Welke with eight tackles, Colten Shoemaker with six tackles; Evan Shoemaker and Kelly each with four tackles, Eichleberger, Tucker Anderson, Drake Brandt, Sudbeck, and Cort Chohon each had three tackles, Brown, Mathews, Daine Brandt, Noah Manchester, and Charlie Morrow each had two tackles, Angel Sanchez, Ethan Soukup, Tavin Morrow and Yates each had one. The Eagles ran 47 plays for 26 first downs and had five penalties for 40 yards. The Indians ran 42 plays for 10 first downs and had seven penalties for 97 yards.
