The St. Mary's Cardinals have wrapped up their 2024 season with a 72-26 loss to the Central Valley Cougars. The Cougars are media favorites to be the champions in this year's playoffs. The Cougars took the first score early in the game with a few minutes off the clock when Zaden Wolf ran in a nine-yard touchdown. The Cougars controlled the game, scoring on about every possession, and racked up 22 points alone in the first quarter. The Cards scored in the first when Gage Hedstrom threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Logan Brabec to put six on the board. The second quarter was just as bleak as the Cougars put 36 points to the Cards two touchdowns. Hedstrom hit Barlow on a 42 and 36-yard touchdown for 12 points and to trail at the half 58 -18. Central Valley took it slower in the second half, hitting the end zone twice for 14 points and holding the Cards to eight in the fourth. The Cards finish their season 6-4. The Cards ran 49 plays and had nine first downs and four penalties for 25 yards. The Cougars ran 45 plays and had 24 first downs and 11 penalties for 80 yards. The Cougars kept a lid on the Cardinals' rushing game, allowing only 54 yards. Hedstrom had 16 carries for 41 yards; Jace Rosenkrans five carries for six yards; and Drake Berg two carries for five yards. Ben Barlow led the Cardinals in receiving with four catches for 91 yards and three touchdowns; Brabec one catch for 42 yards and one touchdown; Risken Dawson six catches for 42 yards; and Berg one catch for nine yards. Hedstrom led the defense with nine tackles; Ben Pongratz and Dawson six tackles each; Keigan Couch four tackles; Rosenkrans and Barlow each had three tackles; and James Eby one tackle. The Cardinals have been 0-4 on their record with the Cougars since 2018.
