Eagles Fall By One Point In Back-To-Back Games

OHS (0) TURNER HEISS is surrounded by Battle Creek players while he attempts to keep the ball from their clutches. The Eagles would walk away with a 48-47 loss to the visitors.

The O'Neill High School boys haven't recently seen the most remarkable results from their current basketball season. They faced Ord on Friday, Feb. 14, and took a loss. One week later, on Friday, Feb. 21, the Eagles continued Sub-District competition.

Battle Creek visited the Eagles and gave them a game to remember. The Eagles kicked the game off strong with a 13-7 opening. The Braves answered back 20-19 in the second quarter.

Still up five points, the Eagles were in a good spot going into halftime. The Braves continued their attack, first upping their score 13-9, then 8-6 in the finale.

When the final buzzer rang, the scoreboard determined that Battle Creek was the victor of the 48-47 match. The Eagles had a good start, but they just couldn't hold on and fell short by just a few points.

Turner Heiss scored big with 21 points and five rebounds. Braxen Eichelberger had 12 points and five steals. Caleb Laursen with four points, Nate Brown and Trevor Alder had three points, Porter Mathews and Brady Eichelberger both two points and Jackson Larsen and Ryder Kelly both one rebound.

The Eagles would have one last chance to turn things around this Monday, Feb. 24, when they contested 8-13 Lakeview. And if the Eagles' previous match wasn't  disappointing enough, this one stung even harder.

The match kicked off and both teams were keeping steady ground. The Lakeview Vikings pulled ahead 12-9, but the Eagles were still determined. Soon after, the Eagles would stumble 22-13 to put them in a tight spot going into halftime.

Knowing they were in the final stretch, the boys played like never before. They managed to overcome the Vikings in the latter half of the match.

When that final buzzer erupted, the scoreboard read 54-53 for Lakeview. The Eagles had again missed their mark by just a couple points, not once, but twice.

This game also concludes the Eagles' play for the season. They had a solid start, but they began slipping toward the end. Hopefully next year can bring the Eagles more favorable results.

Braxen Eichelberger led the Eagles with 17 points, Heiss was close behind with 16 points, Brady Eichelberger had five, Kohl, Mathews and Laursen all with four points,  Alder had three points and Brown had one rebound. Leading in other stats was Mathews with seven rebounds and seven steals.
