Florence was born on April 10, 1923 to Joseph and Mary Horak.

Upon graduating from Winnebago High School in 1939, she was awarded the Nebraska Regents Scholarship. She graduated from Duchesne College in Omaha, with a bachelor's degree in 1943, majoring in mathematics and English, along with a teaching certificate.

While she attended Duchesne, she took advanced mathematics classes at Creighton University, where she met a student named Joseph McCarville Jr. After Joe graduated, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and Florence began her teaching career in several high schools throughout Nebraska. When Joe returned from WWII, they married on Dec. 29, 1945.

In 1946, they moved to O'Neill where in partnership with Joe's father, they founded McCarville's Clothing and Shoe Store that operated continuously until Joe's death in 1982.

Once her children became school age, Florence returned to teaching high school (mathematics and English) for several years. Afterward, she began working in the Nebraska Department of Social Services and rose to become the director of a seven county multi service unit.

She retired in 1990, but engaged in many other activities. Florence was an avid bridge player, enjoying the game well into her 90's.

While in O'Neill, she was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church Altar Society and taught religious education. She also volunteered for Birth Right and tutored young adults who were seeking their GED.

In 1996, Florence moved to Prairie Village, KS to be closer to family. She lived there until her passing.

Florence is survived by her brother Joseph (Monica) Horak; four children Joseph (Diane), Robert, George and Ann (John); seven grandchildren Amy (Mike), David (Tess), Bobby (Kelly), Danny (Nelly), Jennifer, Nichole and Michael (Haley);  six great-grandchildren Stellan, Nikko, Vika, Sloane, Sage and Oliver; as well as many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph and her sister Jean.                                    26
