Virgil Dwain Holz, 89, of O'Neill, died Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at Parkside Manor in Stuart.

Visitation was held Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill with a prayer service.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at the Word of Life Christian Center in O'Neill.

Burial was in the O'Neill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Page American Legion Post 315, O'Neill American Legion Post 93 and VFW Post 926.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Virgil was born Sept. 14, 1934 to Otto and Anna (Emgarten) Holz in Clarks. He attended Central City High School through 11th grade and was a part of the 1949 Central City Midgets State Championship Baseball Team.  

In 1951 at the age of 17, Virgil enlisted into the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954.  

Virgil met Carol Ann Bonness and the couple married on Feb. 8, 1959 in Archer. To this union two boys were born Mike and Tim. 

Virgil and Carol Ann lived in Central City, Gunnison, CO, Bloomfield and Ravenna, before residing in Page. Virgil began his long career in the lumber business by first purchasing West Lumber and Coal in Page in 1964. He then purchased Great Plains Supply in 1983 in Orchard, O'Neill Home Center in O'Neill in 1986 and ShaneyFelt Lumber in Long Pine in 1997.

  He was a member of the Nebraska Lumberman's Association, long time member of the Page Fire Department and a lifetime member and past Commander of the Page American Legion Post 315 and VFW Post 926. Virgil was also a member of the Shamrock Livestock Association.

Virgil enjoyed playing baseball and softball and was a baseball umpire for 45 years. He enjoyed going bowling, fishing, spending time in the garden and square dancing with his wife. Virgil loved spending time at holiday gatherings with his family, partaking in many of his grandkid's events and spending time with his neighbors and friends.

Virgil is survived by his wife of 65 years Carol Ann Holz of O'Neill; his children Mike and wife Marilyn Reiser Holz and Tim Holz and Lisa Wies, all of O'Neill; grandchildren Travis Holz and Nikki Nathan and children Kassidee, Tate, Kensley and Wyatt of Concord, Barry Holz and children Zeydan and Hazel Holz of Lincoln, Tiffany Holz Barnes and husband Ben and children Hunter, Gracelyn and Gibsyn of Lincoln, Aleigha Holz VanLaningham and husband Jackson of Lincoln; one sister Suzie Holz Lester and husband Bob of Linton, ND; one sister-in-law Gladys Holz of Central City; one brother-in-law Paul Bonness of Albuquerque, NM; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Norma and Lee Schweikert, two brothers Kenny Holz and Don Holz and his mother- and father-in-law Cora and Elmer Bonness.
