St. Mary's Edged Out By Ainsworth

The St. Mary's Cardinals got edged out of their win last Thursday afternoon in the game's final seconds when the Cards made a valiant run at scoring but couldn't get the ball back in the endzone before the clock ran out against the Ainsworth Bulldogs.

Ainsworth's Carter Nelson ran in the first touchdown for the Bulldogs on a 12-yard play. 

The Cards exchanged yards with the Bulldogs driving multiple times up and down the field. Hedstrom led the Eagles into Ainsworth territory when he hit Dalton Alder on a six-yard touchdown pass and Isaac Everitt caught the conversion to put the Cards up 8-6. Nelson ran in a 53-yard touchdown, and with the Bulldogs unable to score extra points, they went up by 12-8. The Cards took to the air for the next touchdown and scored when Hedstrom hit Everitt on a 33-yard pass. The Cards scored once more before the half on a Hedstrom five-yard touchdown and Everitt caught the conversion to go up 22-12 at the half.

Ainsworth came out of the half motivated to keep their undefeated season alive and their first winning season since the early 2000s. The Bulldogs scored three times in the third to score 24 unanswered points.

The Cards came back in the fourth and scored on a 13-yard touchdown reception to Alder with Hedstrom running in the conversion. The Cards got the ball back with under a minute and threw a couple of Hail Mary passes to drive deep into the Ainsworth territory looking to upset the Bulldogs but were unable to make it with the Ainsworth defense holding them out for the Bulldog win.

Hedstrom threw 27 times for 15 completions and three touchdowns.

Hedstrom led the Cards in rushing with 23 carries for 57 yards and one touchdown; Alder had 13 carries for 17 yards and Everitt had three carries for four yards.

Everitt led the receiving for the Cards with nine catches for 127 yards and one touchdown; Alder had three catches for 36 yards and two touchdowns; Risken Dawson had one catch for 33 yards and Carson Dannenbring had one catch for nine yards.

The Bulldogs had 319 yards, and the Cards had 186 on the day.

Leading the Cardinal defense was Kyle Pribil with 15 tackles, Jace Rosenkrans with 13 tackles, Hedstrom with 12 tackles, Wyatt Scofield with 11 tackles, Everitt with 10 tackles, Dawson with seven tackles, and Alder and Carson Dannenbring with six tackles each.

The Cards will wrap up their regular season Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at Elgin- Elgin Pope John.
