Last week was the second week of the St. Mary's boys basketball season, and they are already proving to be a menace on the court. On Tuesday, Dec. 10 the Cardinals hosted Niobrara/Verdigre and sent them home quickly. The Cardinals came out fierce, dominating the first half of the game with 28 and 19 point quarters, while holding down the Cougars to just six points total. The Cards cooled down after that, even letting the Cougars slip by their defenses. Despite the Cards falling off, they still had the game in the bag and took it 61-25. Eli Banks was the star with 12 points, seven rebounds and one steal; Gage Hedstrom was close behind with 11 points, four rebounds and one steal; James Eby had 11 points, four rebounds and one steal; Logan Brabec 11 points and two rebounds; Xzavier Parks five points, two rebounds and four steals; Max Berg five points and two steals; Drake Berg four points, three rebounds and three steals; John Mlnarik two points and one rebound and Ruger Kraft one rebound. SMH 28 19 6 8 61 NVHS 4 2 8 11 25 Two days later, on Thursday, the Cardinals invited the Gregory Gorillas to the court. This was Gregory's first match of the new season, and going up the Cardinals is a tough way to start. The Gorillas were holding their own, until St. Mary's Gage Hedstrom took control. Hedstrom as well as Brabec were a two-man army, putting up 51 total points on their own. The whole team came together and gave Gregory a tough 64-43 season opener. The Cards now sit at 4-0 with no signs of slowing down. Hedstrom was the MVP with 30 solo points and seven rebounds. Brabec had 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals; Eby seven points and one steal; D. Berg six points, three rebounds and one steal; Banks three rebounds and M. Berg and Dawson both two rebounds and one steal. (0) COMMENTSWelcome to the discussion.
