The St. Mary's Boys' basketball team won the gold medal 63-51 over the Wynot Blue Devils on Friday evening at the Pinnacle Bank Center.

The Cards shot 56 percent on two-pointers and 30 percent from three-point range, while their free-throw shooting was down. Their fast-paced game was too much for Wynot.

Gage Hedstrom, Ben Barlow, and  Logan Brabec secured the Cardinals' win. Barlow scored 19 points, Hedstrom 17, and Brabec 14.

The Cards faced Silver Lake in the first round, getting by them 50-34 and then knocking off Humphrey Archangels 59-46 to move on to face Wynot, who knocked them out of the tournament last year by a score of  53-21.

Brabec and Barlow put 18 points up in the first half, while Hedstrom got most of his points in the second half

"I am just so proud of these guys. Everyone from top to bottom put in a lot of work this year," St. Mary's coach Luke Bulau said.  Wynot came out and played hard. You can tell they had a great game plan, and it was a game that could go either way. They shot the ball real well," said Bulau

"These guys got in a lot of off-season work. These guys are gym rats," Bulau said. "I wouldn't be surprised if when we got home, they asked me for the key to the gym. But I'd like them to enjoy this a little bit first. They come to work, punch the clock, and get after it. Every one of these guys knows their role on this team.", Said Bulau.

The Cardinals will lose one senior this year, so the odds that the Cardinals will be back in Lincoln next season are good.

The Cards previously won the state tourney in 2012, defeating Pawnee City 56-54 and going 28-0. This year, the Cards went 24-5, finishing on top.
