Last week, the St. Mary's boys entered the State Tournament as the number one seed in the 2025 state basketball tourney. The boys' first round of the competition was played last Thursday, Mar. 13, against Silver Lake.

Both teams were doing well, but the Cards were always one step ahead the Mustangs. The opponent had a good rating and were a strong team, but the Cardinals still had them in a tough spot the whole game. After a successful 50-34 first round, the Cardinals held their spot at the top and got the go-ahead to advance.

Logan Brabec crushed the competition with 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals, Brabecs shot 57 percent from the inside; Gage Hedstrom had 13 points, six rebounds and two steals and shot 46 percent from the inside; Ben Barlow had 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals; Risken Dawson had four points and two rebounds; Eli Banks three points and two rebounds; James Eby two points and one rebound; Max Berg three rebounds and Drake Berg one rebound.

The next day, the boys were gearing up for their second round of the Tournament. This time, they would face a tough 19-6 Archangels Catholic team.

Much like their first-round match, the Cardinals came out with a fire that never burned out. They were firing on all cylinders, and the Defenders could only attempt to keep up. In the end, the Cards held their ground the whole way through and reigned supreme 59-46.

Barlow took the spotlight with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals shooting 75 percent from the inside; Hedstrom had 17 points and four rebounds; Brabec had 15 points, six rebounds and three steals; Drake Berg six points and one rebound; Banks two points and three rebounds; Dawson had six rebounds and one steal and Eby two rebounds and one steal.

The Cardinals have climbed their way to top, and they now only had one obstacle left in their path. They faced Wynot on Saturday, Mar. 15, in the final round of the State Tournament.

Both teams have made it far, but now only one could emerge victorious. The Cards pulled ahead early on in the match and never looked back. They were constantly one-upping the competition, giving them no room to keep up.

The Cards entered the final quarter with a seven-point lead over the Blue Devils. With the game in the final minutes and victory in sight, the Cards would just have to keep a steady pace and keep their opponent at bay. The Cards continued sinking points and upped their score by a further five points.

When the end buzzer rang, the  Cards took home their second state title, winning over Wynot 63-51!

Barlow again was the MVP with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals; Hedstrom just behind with 17 points, 10 rebounds and one steal; Brabec had 14 points, four rebounds and one steal; Drake Berg had five points and four rebounds; Eby three points, one rebound and two steals; Max Berg three points; Dawson two points and Banks two rebounds to end off the match.

The boys end off the 2024-25 season with an impressive 24-5 record, as well as claiming the NVC Championship and, of course, the Class D-2 State Championship!
