The St. Mary's Cardinals have been on a mean streak of wins, but last week they may have finally met their match. It was during the first round of the 2022 NSAA Volleyball Championships on Thursday, Nov. 3 and the Cardinals fell in three to Overton who went on to take second at the state tourney. The first set came extremely close, with the Cards only falling by two points. Overton jumped out to a 12-7 lead and then increased it to 16-9. Overton kept the lead going 18-11 and then the Cards came back tieing the match at 22. The Eagles held steady and won the match 26-24. Set two didn't go so well for the Cards , however. Overton's impressive offense and defense only allowed the Cards to put up 13 points on the board. The Cards finally started to pick back up in the third set, but it was still just not enough. Overton had already established themselves as queens of the court. The Cardinals got washed away by the opposition, 0-3. The final scores for the three sets were 24-26, 13-25 and 22-25. Mya Hedstrom led the Cards with 14 kills, two blocks and 24 digs; Lorissa Reiman 13 kills, one ace serve, two blocks and 14 digs; Alissa Brabec three ace serves, 12 digs and 25 set assists; Hope Williamson one ace serve and 21 digs; Joslyn Eby one ace serve, one block and one dig; Emma Otte six digs; Annabelle Barlow four digs; and Gracie Williamson two digs. It should also be noted that this match ends the Cardinals impressive 11 win streak they had recently been holding.
