Alliance — Sr. Maureen Murphy, 90, of Alliance, died Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. Visitation was held Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2022 at the church in Alliance. Frs. Mat Koperski and Tim Stoner will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Alliance. Memorials may be made to the family for future designation. Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Alliance is in charge of the arrangements. She was born July 13, 1931 at Stuart, to Jeremiah Patrick and Sophia Theresa (Kaup) Murphy and was given the name of Catherine Benedicta Murphy. Sr. Maureen followed the Lord's call to the Sisters of St. Francis and entered as a candidate on Sept. 8, 1949 at Marycrest Convent in Denver, CO. She professed her vows on Aug. 15, 1952 and took the name of Sr. M. Maureen. She received her B.S. degree in August 1959 from Regis College in Denver. She then obtained her M.A. in theology from St. Francis College in Joliet, IL in 1965. Her ministry of teaching took her to every school in the Sister's Province beginning in 1952 at St. Mary's in O'Neill. Her other assignments took her to St. Elizabeth's in Denver, CO, Rushville, Holy Rosary Mission, SD, St. Mary's in O'Neill, St. Agnes in Scottsbluff and St. Francis, SD. In 1974 through 1977 she would live in Rome, Italy and teach at the Generalate. Following her return to the United States she would come to Alliance. From 1978 until her retirement she served in various pastoral ministries in Minot, ND, Alliance, Manderson, SD and Denver until retiring in 2006 living in both Denver and Alliance. Sr. Maureen is survived by her eight siblings Cornelius Murphy and Henry (Helen) Murphy, all of Stuart, Sophie Ingraham of Aurora, CO, Jane (Tom) LaHood of Omaha, Eileen Denning of Avoca, Iowa, Dr. James (Cherie) Murphy of Norfolk, Rita Murphy of Paonia, CO and John (Alissandra) Murphy of New York, NY; numerous nieces and nephews; her Franciscan family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters Betty Ann, who died in infancy, and Mary Robertcht and one brother Frank Murphy.
