DAS To Sell O'Neill Armory To OPS

Dec 13, 2023 (0)

On Dec. 6, the Department of Administrative Services ended the public auction for the O'Neill Armory after receiving no bids since placing the property up for auction on Oct. 11. Instead the Department of Administrative Services will engage in a private sale of the property with the O'Neill Public School System after determining that a private sale of the Armory to the O'Neill Public School System is in the best interest of the state. State law requires DAS to sell or lease the property by the method that produces the best advantage for the State of Nebraska, including auction, sealed bid, public sale or private sale.

“This is a win-win for taxpayers and the O'Neill community and will ensure that the property remains in productive use,” said Department of Administrative Services Director Jason Jackson.

Superintendent Mike Rotherham of the O'Neill Public Schools stated, “I am grateful to Governor Pillen and his team for working with us on this sale. I am extremely happy that the O'Neill Public Schools will be able to purchase the building to meet a variety of future needs. This is a great win to help support students in O'Neill and Holt County.”

Before the property sale to the public school system is complete, the Nebraska National Guard will relocate the O'Neill Armory statue memorializing the deaths of two 755th Chemical Company Security Force soldiers who were killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom to the Atkinson American Legion Post. The statue also memorializes the service of the rest of the company.
