Cards 5-0 Heading Into Homecoming

The St. Mary's Cardinals are sitting at 5-0 with their homecoming this Friday against EPPJ at 2:30 p.m. The Cards are leading in power points at the D-2 level. Trailing the Cards are Howell's Dodge, Hitchcock County, Anselmo-Merna, and Central Valley. The Cards advanced their cause this week with a 78-35 win over Ainsworth.

The Cards made easy work of the Bull Dogs, leading at the half 52-14.

The game had a home-field advantage for Ainsworth. The Bull Dogs drove down deep into Cardinal territory, and Chris Fernandez ran in a three-yard touchdown, followed by Witten Painter for the two-point conversion. The Cards answered quickly and effectively, scoring four times against the Bulldog defense. Gage Hedstrom hit Lane Bybee on a 43-yard touchdown pass, and with no conversion, the Cards trailed 8-6. Hedstrom next hit Ben Barlow on a 49-yard touchdown pass and again came up short on the conversion. The next score came on a pick-six by Hedstrom, who intercepted a pass and ran 48 yards for the score. Ainsworth got the next score when Fernandez hit Jacob Ortner on a 16-yard touchdown. The final score of the quarter saw Hedstrom hit Barlow for a 30-yard touchdown pass with Hedstrom running in the conversion for the Cards to lead 26-14 at the quarter.

The second quarter was a killer for Ainsworth as the Cards scored 26 unanswered points, holding the Dogs to a goose egg.

In the second quarter had an eight-yard touchdown run and threw three touchdown passes; the first to Drake Berg for 10 yards, the second a 29-yard touchdown pass to Barlow, and a 37-yard touchdown pass to James Eby, with Hedstrom hitting Barlow for the conversion before the half.

Hedstrom hit Bybee again in the third on a short 7-yard score, and the Bulldogs got a five-yard score by Painter.

The fourth saw the Cards bring in the secondary with Keigan Couch running in a 35-yard touchdown, with the next score being a 13-yard touchdown by Couch again, with Kolton Lavicky running in the conversion, and Cooper Cole scored the last points for the Cards on a 22-yard run. The Bull Dogs scored twice in the fourth on a run and a passing touchdown.

The Cards ran 55 plays and had 24 first downs and 15 penalties for 90 yards.

Hedstrom threw 24 times for 17 completions and 319 yards and seven touchdowns.

Couch led the Cards in rushing with 11 carries for 89 yards, Hedstrom had eight carries for 64 yards, Cole four carries for 38 yards, Berg two carries for 13 yards, and Myles Hamilton one carry for two yards, and Logan Brabec had three carries for two yards.

Bybee led the Cardinal receivers with six catches for 128 yards, Barlow had six Catches for 126 yards,  Eby had two catches for 40 yards, Couch and Ben Pongratz each had one catch for 11 yards, and Berg had one catch for 10 yards.

Leading the defense was Dalton Herley with 11 tackles, Hedstrom nine tackles, Hamilton and Eli Banks each had six tackles, Gerg five tackles, Ruger Kraft and Couch each had four tackles, Connor Banks had three tackles, and Barlow, Eby, Memphis Brabec, and Lavicky each had two tackles.
