2023: A Year In Review

2023 is now in the books, and what are a few of the top things that happened this year? Here are the highlights from this year's headlines.

The first week of the year highlighted the first baby born at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital on Jan. 1st.

Week two of January announced that William Clark Green and American Aquarium would make up the year's Summerfest concert.

The next week displayed OHS coach Seth Kallhoff achieving his 200th career win against Winnebago.

Ending off January,West Holt Wrestling coach Randy Schroeder was honored as a 2023 Hall of Fame inductee by the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association.

Opening February, OHS was once again named an apple distinguished school since 2010.

The week of Valentine's, it was announced that the St. Mary's Volleyball girls took the Championship in the NVC.

Week seven was dedicated to honoring the members of the Chambers Fire Department.

The fourth week of February, Bomgaars donated $2,600 to Avera St. Anthony's Hospital Outpatient Oncology and Infusion Center.

March kicked things off by announcing the St. Mary's basketball girls had made it all the way to the state tournament.

Week two of March saw seven new CASA volunteers sworn-in.

The week of St. Patrick's saw Marge Walsh and Carrol McKay inducted into the Irish Hall of Fame.

The next week reported on the chilly St. Patrick's day parade held this year.

In the final week of March, HCAS held a huge fundraiser in which they raised $12,000.

The first week of April announced several Easter egg hunts at various locations in O'Neill.

The week of April 13 the O'Neill Chamber of Commerce presented a check to the Fenians society.

Next week, OHS and St. Mary's held their prom nights and announced their King and Queens.

April ended with Gov. Jim Pillen signing Legislative Bill 77 into law.

May kicked off with the city planting new trees in Ford and Carney Park, as well as the Cemetery for Arbor Day.

Week two of May, Torpin's Rodeo Market donated a pallet of Powerade to the O'Neill and Page Fire Departments.

The week of May 18 congratulated area seniors for graduating during the 2023 year.

The final week of May, Avera announced their wrap-up of phase one of the renovations to their building.

June kicked things off by announcing the Dispatch Center was having trouble keeping staff.

Next week it was reported that an O'Neill graduate holds a patent for systems used in certain U.S. Fighter Jets.

Week three of June, O'Neill held their annual flag burning to properly dispose of old flags.

June ended by honoring a new EMT at the O'Neill Fire Department, as well as honoring the firefighter and EMT of the year.

July started with Governor Jim Pillen's visit to O'Neill to speak about his position and report on the state's progress.

The second week of July reported on the fourth of July parade held in Stuart.

Week three of July, ACFF donated $3,500 to the Atkinson Thrift Shop to help with it's new flooring project.

July ended with news that Atkinson had received state recognition as a Leadership Certified Community.

August began with the mayor of Wauwatosa, Dennis Mcbride, visiting with O'Neill mayor Scott Menish.

The week of Aug. 10 reported on the closing of the Golden Age Center and the plans for the vacant building.

Week three of August revealed an O'Neill veteran, Keith McKim, was to be a speaker at the American Legion Convention.

The following week covered the highlights of the Atkinson Hay Days Parade.

August wrapped-up with a report on the number of students enrolled in OHS as well as St. Mary's.

September began with Holt County TeamMates announcing the renewal of their program this school year.

The following week recapped this year's Holt County Fair.

Week three of September touched on area school's Homecoming candidates.

September ended with a report that the city of O'Neill's budget had decreased six percent from last year.

October opened with the City Council discussing the police department's move to the recently closed Golden Age Center building.

Week two of October reported on charging stations for electric vehicles being placed at Cubby's.

The week of October 19 announced that the Armory was to be auctioned off toward the end of the year.

Halloween week, the Chamber of Commerce held three ribbon cuttings for various businesses.

November's first week saw ADK donate a swing set to the Lions Kiddie Park.

The week of Nov. 9, OHS announced their annual Veteran's Day program was on Nov. 10.

Next week, the winners of this year's ladies night out were announced.

Week four of November saw St. Patrick's Church acquire a new roof via Strong Roofing of Fremont.

November ended with the St. Mary's One-Act team being crowned as District Champions and qualifying for state.

December opened with Atkinson native, Karlee Schrunk releasing the first of her childrens books.

Week two of December revealed Kip Krysl's plans to retire after 25 years of service to the city of O'Neill and Boyd County.

Last week's edition included letters from kid's Christmas wish lists this year.
