Cardinals Advance To Quarter Finals With Win Over Burwell

OPENING KICK OFF TOUCHDOWN - St. Mary's Gage Hedstrom ran the opening kick off against Burwell for a touchdown in the Cardinal's second round of the state tourney. The Cards will host Sandhills Thedford at home this Friday at 5 p.m. for the state quarterfinals game. The Stuart Broncos will host Leyton for a 3 p.m. game.

The St. Mary's Cardinals have advanced to the Nebraska State Quarter-Finals in football with a win over the Burwell Longhorns 46-6 at home last Friday, Oct. 31.

Right out of the gate, the Cards jumped on the board when Gage Hedstrom took the Longhorns' kick 76 yards back for a touchdown. The Cards kept up the pressure, and a 70-yard touchdown pass from Hedstrom to Barlow finished up the first quarter with Hedstrom taking in both two-point conversions to put the Cardinals up 16-0.

It was the combo of Hedstrom and Barlow again in the second, with Hedstrom running in a 65-yard touchdown and Barlow catching a 32-yard touchdown pass with Hedstrom taking in the conversion. The final score of the half went to Drake Berg after the Cards drove into Longhorn territory and Berg ran in a five-yard score for the Cards to lead at the half 38-0.

The Cards took a break in the third, running through players for playing time. 

Ruger Kraft got the last score of the game for the Cards on a goal-line drive with Hedstrom hitting Lane Bybee for the two-point conversion.

Burwell did score when Brody Jensen ran in a 34-yard touchdown for the Longhorns to put six on the board.

The Cards ran 26 plays, gained 10 first downs, and had one penalty. The Longhorns ran 55 plays for nine first downs and had five penalties for 29 yards.

Hedstron threw six times for two completions and two touchdowns.

Hedstrom led the receivers with 11 carries for 153 yards and one touchdown; Keigan Couch had two carries for 11 yards; Berg had one carry for five yards and one touchdown; and Kraft had one carry for a touchdown.

Barlow had two catches, both for touchdowns and 102 yards.

Bybee led the Cardinal defense with 14 tackles, Dalton Herley had 13 tackles, Barlow had 10 tackles, Berg and Couch each had eight tackles, Hedstrom had seven tackles, Eli Banks had six tackles, Ben Pongratz had four tackles, Myles Hamilton had two tackles, Ruger Kraft and John Mlnarik each had one tackle.
