After climbing their way through the ranks, the St. Mary's Lady Cardinals were stopped short last week when they entered the State Tournament. They competed against Archangels Catholic on Thursday, Mar. 6, in the Lincoln Devaney Sports Center and fell 44-38. Both teams were evenly matched, but the Cardinals fell just short of the Defenders. Everyone was sinking points and defending on point. In the end, the Cards fell behind by six points and were forced to concede victory. Gracie Williamson put up 17 points, nine rebounds and two steals; Addyson Peterson had seven points, one rebound and one steal; Annabelle Barlow had six points, five rebounds and six steals; Pyper Ickes five points, two rebounds and four steals and Emerson Mlnarik three points, three rebounds and one steal. The Archangel Catholic Defenders pushed on in the tourney, falling 47-38 against Sacred Heart, then downing Wilcox-Hildreth 32-27 to secure themselves a third place overall ranking. Sacred Heart would go on to take home the Championship title on Saturday, Mar. 8. The Cardinal girls put up one last good show before they packed it in. They end the season with an impressive 24-3 record. The Cardinal boys will have their shot at State this Thursday, Mar. 13. The Cards enter with a record of 21-5 and their opponent, the Silver Lake Mustangs, enter with a 19-6 rating.
