ST. MARY'S (24) GAGE HEDSTROM drives to the bucket against EPPJ's (24) Max Henn in the NVC Championship.

Last week the St. Mary's Cardinals wrapped up the NVC Conference with a perfect 3-0 clean sweep.

Last year, the Cardinals came up just short and managed themselves a third-place rating. This year, they went above and beyond and climbed their way to the top of the competition!

They played their first game of the Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 1, against North Central and quickly sat them down 72-30.

Then, on Monday, Feb. 3 the Cardinals were pitted against Chambers/Wheeler Central. This was an exciting match-up, with both teams constantly putting up numbers. In the end, however, the Cardinals managed to sneak ahead and took it 55-40 to move on to the Championships.

Ben Barlow led the team with 14 points, six rebounds and one steal; Gage Hedstrom also had 14 points, five rebounds and one steal; Logan Brabec had nine points, six rebounds and three steals; James Eby and Drake Berg eight points and one rebound each; Risken Dawson two points and three rebounds; Eli Banks six rebounds; Max Berg one rebound and Xzavier Parks one steal.

The Cardinals took a well-deserved rest for a few days, but on Saturday, Feb. 8 the Cardinals hit the court again. This time, they would face 11-8 EPPJ to determine this year's NVC Champ.

Despite the team's varied records this season, the Cards and the Wolfpack were neck-and-neck the whole game. They were both sinking baskets left and right and it was anyone's guess who would come out on top.

When the final buzzer rang to end the Tournament, the scoreboard read 69-63, and it would be the St. Mary's Cardinals who walked home with the gold!

A big congrats to the boys for taking home the Championship title this year. They crushed this year's Conference and are on a good pace overall this season. Their record stands at 16-4 with a six-win streak.
