Cardinal Boys Advance To Finals In NVC Tournament

After a few unlucky games, the SMH Cardinals are back to their usual flawless games, including their first game in the NVC Tourney.

They first visited Creighton last Tuesday and defeated them 68-33. The Cards immediately brought the heat, starting the game 17-4. The Bulldogs slipped through the Cards' defenses in the second stanza, but the boys dominated the second half for an easy victory.

Gage Hedstrom dominated with 21 points, three rebounds and five steals; Ben Barlow had 18 points, three rebounds and two steals; Logan Brabec 11 points, six rebounds and one steal; Eli Banks seven points, three rebounds and one steal; Drake Berg four points, four rebounds and one steal; Xzavier Parks three points and one steal; Risken Dawson two points, nine rebounds and one steal; Max Berg two points, two rebounds and one steal and James Eby two rebounds and one steal.

On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Cardinals visited Stuart for a conference match-up.

The Cardinals set a great pace from the start, putting up 24 to the Broncos' 17. The Broncos were putting up numbers, but the Cardinals were always one step ahead. The end quarter closed on a tie, but the Cards' massive lead from early on afforded them the win.

Brabec had a big night with 22 points, four rebounds and five steals; Barlow was close with 21 points, five rebounds and three steals; Hedstrom had 18 points, nine rebounds and one steal; M. Berg had two points and three rebounds; Eby two points, two rebounds, and one steal; Parks two points and two steals; Dawson four rebounds; D. Berg two rebounds and one steal and Banks two rebounds.

The Cardinals played their first game of the NVC Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m., at Elgin Public School. They faced off against North Central.

It must have been disappointing for North Central to have to battle the St. Mary's Cardinals in the first round. The boys overwhelmed the Knights from the start and never laid off the pressure. The Cards easily cleared the first match of the Tournament 72-30.

Eby put up 17 points, two rebounds and one steal; Hedstrom had 12 points, two rebounds and one steal; Barlow had 11 points, six rebounds and one steal; D. Berg nine points and three rebounds; Brabec eight points, seven rebounds and three steals; Parks six points and three rebounds; Dawson five points and three rebounds; M. Berg two points, four points and two steals and Banks two points.
