Last weekend the Niobrara Valley Conference tournament was held at last. The St. Mary's Cardinal girls made their way through the entire tournament to be crowned the winner! Their first match-up was against West Holt on Monday, Jan. 29 at 6:00 p.m. This was an incredibly even match, with the victor coming out two points ahead. The opening quarter saw the Cardinals take a beating, losing 14-7. They continued on this downward spiral with a 13-8 loss in the second. The Cardinals were not about to lose their first match and fall this early in the tournament. In quarter three, the Cards put up 15 points while holding down the Huskies to just six. The Cards managed a 14-9 final quarter to steal the game and move into the semi-finals. Mya Hedstrom was the easy MVP of the game with 22 points, shooting one of four three-pointers for 25 percent and eight of 10 two pointers for 80 percent. Hedstrom also had eight rebounds and six steals; Alissa Brabec had eight points, two rebounds and two steals; Lorissa Reiman six points, 10 rebounds and two steals; Annabelle Barlow six points, two rebounds and two steals; Gracie Williamson two points, one rebound and one steal; and Pyper Ickes three rebounds. SMHS 7 8 15 14 44 WHHS 14 13 6 9 42 After a three day break, the tournament resumed with the semi-finals at West Holt on Thursday, Feb.1 where the Cardinals faced off with Niobrara/Verdigre. The Cardinals came out hot putting up 24 points and leaving the competition in the dust with only two. The Cougars bit back in quarter two with a 15-13 win. The first quarter led the Cougars down a path they would never come back from however. Quarter three was another victory for the Cardinals, keeping them firmly in first place. The Cougars made a final effort and took the end 19-11 but still never recovered from the beginning. With this match won, the Cards would now move into the Championship round of the NVC. Alissa Brabec stole the show with a big 27 points, shooting six of 14 three-pointers for 38 percent and three of six two-pointers for 50 percent. Brabec also had three rebounds and one steal; Reiman wasn't far behind with 21 points, 19 rebounds and three steals; Hedstrom had 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals; Barlow five points, three rebounds and one steal; and Williamson three rebounds and one steal. SMHS 24 13 23 11 71 NVHS 2 15 20 19 56 After two days pass, the St. Mary's Cardinal and Elgin/Pope John girls entered the stage at Summerland on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 6:00 p.m. This match promised to be a good one, as both competitors had made their way through so many games to make it this far. Quarter one ended in a stalemate-giving neither team that important early lead. The Cardinals kicked the game into high gear with 19-point second quarter, while EPPJ only managed nine. The Cardinals were in a good spot, and they just needed to play consistently to take the victory. Another 19 points in the third quarter gave the Cards the major lead they were looking for. The scoreboard now read 46-29 and it would be a tough turnaround for the Wolfpack to make. In the end, the Wolfpack did manage to take the end quarter, but the Cardinals still won the game, and with it, the NVC Tournament. Alissa Brabec again scored double-digits with 21 points, shooting three of eight three-pointers for 38 percent and four of seven two-pointers for 57 percent. Brabec also had two rebounds and three steals; Reiman had 12 points, 11 rebounds and three steals; Barlow had nine points, two rebounds and two steals; Hedstrom seven points, 11 rebounds and two steals; Williamson five points, seven rebounds and two steals; and Ickes two points and three rebounds. SMHS 8 19 19 10 56 EPPJ 8 9 12 14 43 Last year's 2023 NVC girls Tournament was also won by the St. Mary's Cardinals where they took down Niobrara/Verdigre. Good job and keep going Cardinals!
