Last week held the long-awaited Mid-States Conference, and some teams fared better than others. In the case of the O'Neill Eagle boys, they weren't able to keep their footing against Norfolk Catholic and Guardian Angels Central Catholic. Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Wayne kicked the tournament off for the boys. The opening quarter of the match was a good start, the Eagles putting up 18 and Norfolk Catholic 15. Quarter two gave the Knights a decent eight point buff, while the Eagles came close with seven-still putting them in a comfortable first place position. Unfortunately for the Eagles, a 23-11 third allowed the Knights to completely shift the game. Another four-point advantage at the end gave the Knights a definite win over the Eagles despite their strong opener. Drew Morrow tallied a jaw-dropping 34 solo points, shooting four of 11 three-pointers for 36 percent and nine of 18 two-pointers for 50 percent. Morrow also had six rebounds and four steals; Turner Heiss scored five points, three rebounds and two steals; Brady Eichelberger had three points, two rebounds and four steals; Colton Osborne two points, 11 rebounds and one steal; Porter Mathews two points, two rebounds and two steals; and Ryder Pokorny four rebounds. Quarter one was a close call, but the Eagles got shorted by three points to GACC's 16. The Eagles kicked into high gear and took the second by one point, winning it 11-10. Quarter three was a low-scorer for the Eagles, only managing five points while GACC put up nine. In the final stretch the Eagles once again took control and took the final 10-8. This wasn't enough to save this game for the Eagles, as they fell in a close 43-39 final match. Turner Heiss ended with 18 points, shooting nine of 10 two-pointers for 18 percent. Heiss also had one rebound and two steals; Pokorny had eight points, three rebounds and two steals; Morrow four points and five rebounds; Osborne three points, two rebounds and one steal; Eichelberger two points and four rebounds; Dusatko two points and three rebounds; Mathews two points and one rebound; and Trevor Alder one rebound and two steals.
