After an incredibly impressive display of talent, the St. Mary's Cardinal volleyball team have lost their first match of the entire season. The Cardinal's year's first game was in late August. The Cards first match of last week was an easy take-down for the team. They took on the Osmond Tigers on Tues. Oct. 10. Set one was an easy wash for the Cardinals, blowing away the Tigers 25-12. The second set didn't do much to help the Tigers as they were now under half the points of the Cards. The Cardinals continued to rack up points in set three and held the opposition to just 14. Mya Hedstrom took charge with 18 kills, two blocks, seven digs and one set assist; Pyper Ickes eight kills and 13 digs; Lorissa Reiman four kills, six ace serves and five blocks; Gracie Williamson four kills and three digs; Alissa Brabec one kill, six ace serves, one block, six digs and 28 set assists; Joslyn Eby one kill, one block, three digs and four set assists; Annabelle Barlow five ace serves; and Emma Otte one ace serve and three digs. This nail-biting game started off with the Cardinals taking a pretty hefty lead of 25-16. Set two saw the Cards hold down their opponent to gain an additional five points. The next round would be the beginning of the Bobcats eventual take-over. Set three was taken by the Bobcats by just two points, nothing that could intimidate the Cardinal team. By the fourth set, things were starting to look dicey for the Cardinals. If they lost the next set, it would be the Bobcat's win. In a surprising turn from the beginning of the game, the Bobcats managed to take hold of the match and stole the victory right from under the Cardinal's feet. They ended the final set with a score of 15-13. This would end the Cardinals incredible 25-win streak. It should be noted that the Cardinals did win in terms of amount of points, but they were just narrowly beaten out in terms of set wins. Reiman was MVP this match with 24 kills, two ace serves, two blocks and one dig; Hedstrom 20 kills, two blocks, 18 digs and one set assist; Williamson eight kills, one block and two digs; Ickes three kills, three ace serves, 17 digs and one set assist; Brabec two kills, three ace serves, three blocks, seven digs and 52 set assists; Eby two kills, one ace serve, one block, 13 digs and two set assists; Barlow five ace serves and 13 digs; and Otte 13 digs.
