SMH Boys Fall At 2nd Round Of NVC Tourney

Feb 8, 2023 (0)

The St. Mary's boys were busy last week competing in the NVC Tournament held Saturday, January 28.

In their first round, the boys faced off against the Chambers/Wheeler Central Renegades last Monday at 5:00.

The Cardinals took a small early lead, 17-15. It was only by two points, but it was a good start. Second quarter the Cards pushed ahead further, gaining another two points over the Renegades.

By the end of third quarter, things weren't looking great for the Renegades. They were down 10 points this late in the match. The final quarter the Cardinals brought their opponent down further with another 10 point leap.

Leading the Cards was Dalton Alder with an impressive 28 points, shooting seven of 13 three-pointers for 54 percent and two of seven two-pointers for 29 percent; Gage Hedstrom had 15 points and eight rebounds; Isaac Everitt 11 points and six rebounds; Sam Barlow four points and two rebounds; Carson Dannenbring three points and five rebounds; and Jack Gydesen one rebound.

The next day after their first match, the Cardinal boys competed in their second round of the Tournament. This time they were pitted against the Summerland Bobcats.

The match got off to a rough start for the cardinals, with them falling behind by five points this early. The next quarter was a little better for the Cards, but they still allowed the Bobcats to score over them.

Moving into third quarter, the Cards knew they needed to pick up the pace, or they would have no chance of winning. They went all out and managed to take the set by three points. Unfortunately for the Cards, the Bobcats would even this out in the next quarter. The match ended with the Cards falling by just seven points.

Alder leads the Cards again with a solid 26 points, shooting eight of 13 three-pointers for 62 percent and one of two two-pointers for 50 percent, as well as one rebound; Everitt with 11 points and eight rebounds; Hedstrom 10 points and seven rebounds; Barlow two points and two rebounds; Risken Dawson six rebounds; and Dannenbring four rebounds.
