Steven "Steve" John McDonald, 74, of O'Neill, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2023 at his home near O'Neill.

Memorial visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023 at the mortuary in O'Neill. Rev. Wayne Owens will officiate.

Military rites provided by the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93 will immediately follow the service.

Memorials may be made to Steve's brother Stuart McDonald for future designation.

Steven was born on Sept. 27, 1949 in Tilden to James and Martha (Grgurich) McDonald. The family lived in O'Neill and he attended St. Mary's Academy. He graduated in 1967. 

After graduation, Steve attended John F. Kennedy College in Wahoo before enlisting in the United States Navy on Jan. 15, 1970. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 14, 1974. His book, “A Sailor's Adventures” chronicles some of his more memorable times in the Navy.

Steve worked as a maintenance supervisor for many years for Tyson Foods, first in Norfolk, and after that location closed, in Wilbur.  

After his parents moved to Bellevue, Steve returned to O'Neill where he was an electrical contractor and worked for Green Pastures.  He retired in 2019.

He was a member of the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93, the Experimental Aircraft Association, and the coffee club at the Veterans Service Office.  

Steve enjoyed working on his cars and trucks.  He regularly entered car shows and has taken home many trophies. He also loved to fly planes and attended many EAA Airventure Fly-in Conventions in Oshkosh, WI.

Steve is survived by his mother Martha McDonald of Bellevue; his five siblings Stuart (Tamie) McDonald of O'Neill, Jeanne McDonald of Bellevue, Pam McDonald of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Tim McDonald and Cindy (Verlon) Barnes, all of Bellevue; five nieces; five nephews; six great-nieces; and five great-nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his father James McDonald in 2008.
