The St. Mary's Cardinals boys basketball team had an easy time making it through sub-districts with two wins at home over Niobrara/Verdigre on Tuesday, Feb. 22, by a score of 77-47 and then over Stuart on Thursday, Feb. 24, winning 55-27. They then advanced to district play and downed Spalding Academy at Bartlett on Saturday, Feb. 26, winning 74-33.

The Cards achieved an easy thirty point victory on Tuesday, out scoring the N/V Cougars 49-23 at the half. The Cards put the bench into the game in the second half scoring another twenty-eight points.

Aidan Hedstrom tore up the courts putting up twenty-eight points for the Cards, shooting eleven of nineteen under the bucket for fifty-eight percent, bringing in twelve rebounds and grabbing one steal. Isaac Everitt sixteen points, four rebounds and three steals; Adam Everitt eleven points, nine rebounds and two steals; Blake Benson nine points and two steals; Charles Barlow six points, eight rebounds and one steal; Tate Thompson five points, five rebounds and five steals; and Sam Barlow two points and one rebound.

It was a good old-fashioned Holt County match-up for the D2-6 sub-district title between the St. Mary's Cardinals and the Stuart Broncos on Thursday, Feb. 24. The Cards claimed the win, 55-27, to advance to the district championship game. The Broncos finished their season with a 15-8 record.

The Cardinals didn't take long to overpower the Broncos, racking up twenty-two points while the Broncos managed to put six on the board.

Stuart made adjustments and held the Cardinal offense to just 7 points in the second as well as the third quarters. By the fourth quarter, however, the Cards' offense came alive, racking up 19 points to seal the win and advance to the district finals.

Adam Everitt led the Cardinals with thirteen points, five rebounds and three steals; Benson twelve points and one rebound; Hedstrom 10 points, five rebounds and one steal; Dalton Alder six points; Isaac Everitt six points and six rebounds; Thompson three points, three rebounds and one steal; Carson Dannenbring two points and one rebound; Joseph Wiese two points and two rebounds; and Gabe Pribil one point.

Leading the Broncos were Schyuler Mustin 13 points, two rebounds and three steals; Ryan Steinhauser five points, one rebound and one steal; Anthony Heiser four points and four rebounds; Ben Paxton three points; and Tyson Stracke two points and three rebounds.

The win over Stuart gave the Cards a go for district play on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Bartlett against the Spalding Academy Shamrocks. The Cards, who played the Shamrocks on Valentines Day, had a relative repeat in the district final, thrashing the Shamrocks 74-33.

The Cards started out strong with their running offense inflicting a 12 point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the lead grow to 49-21.

The Cards kept the pressure on and held the Shamrocks to two points in the third while putting up seven of their own. The running clock began in the third and the second team took to the floor to finish off the win.

Hedstrom had twenty-three points, shooting seventy percent from the field and eighty-six percent from the charity stripe. Hedstrom also added seven rebounds and one steal. Hedstrom is now averaging nineteen points per game on the season. Blake Benson had fifteen points, shooting five of ten for fifty percent in three pointers. Benson also had two rebounds and one steal; Isaac Everett nine points, four rebounds and two steals; Charles Barlow eight points, eight rebounds and three steals; Adam Everitt six points, three rebounds and three steals; Gabe Pribil six points and two rebounds; Alder three points and four rebounds; Thompson two points and five rebounds; and Carson Dannenbring two points and one rebound.

The St. Mary's Lady Cards have also punched their ticket for the Nebraska State Basketball Tourney next week in Lincoln.

The Cards sealed the deal with a 56-32 win over Exeter-Milligan on Friday, Feb. 25 at Albion.

The Cards took the wind out of the Timberwolves sails when Alissa Brabec hit a three pointer to propel the Cards to a 9 point run in the first minutes of the game. Allowing only 6 points in the first stanza, the Cards led 18-6 heading into the second quarter.

Pouring on the press, the Lady Cards out ran their opponent in the first half, heading into halftime with a 33 point lead.

The Timberwolves came out of the locker room with a battle plan and managed to hold the Cards to eight points in the third but the Cardinal defense repaid the favor and held the Timberwolves to seven.

With a 41-24 lead heading into the fourth, the Cards bench saw some action to finish out the game with a 24 point victory.

Brabec had an outstanding game chipping in twenty-four points for the Cardinals, shooting six of eight for seventy-five percent in three pointers and adding two rebounds and three steals; Mya Hedstrom fourteen points, nine rebounds and seven steals; Charley Mlnarik seven points, eleven rebounds and four steals; Lorissa Reiman six points, fourteen rebounds and one steal; Hope Williamson four points, five rebounds and two steals; and Annabelle Barlow one point.

The Lady Cards will see action on Monday, March 7 followed by the boys on Tuesday, March 8 at the Nebraska State Basketball Tourney in Lincoln. Opponents were not released at the time of publication.
