To celebrate Law Day, the Justices of the Nebraska Supreme Court will create a courtroom on the stage of O'Neill High School on Thursday, April 27, 2023, for an oral argument session. This visit will be the first time the Court holds arguments in O'Neill, making it a unique community experience.

The event will be held in the old gym. The doors open at 8:30 a.m. anyone interested in attending will need to go through state patrol security. The court will end approximately at 11:30 a.m.

The argument session invitation, extended by Principal William Wragge, promises to be an educationally enriching experience for students and community members who attend. Through the program, the Supreme Court and Nebraska's legal community have been making an ongoing effort to raise awareness of court processes and the significance of civics education to American society.

Cases being heard are:

• State v. Elias - S-22-0443 -- Second Degree Murder from Lancaster County.

•Northwest Crossings, LLC v. Bruce Lavalleur, PC - S-22-0622  Motion for New Trial in contracts case from Hall County.

Starting at 9:40 a.m., the court arguments will begin, preceded by an introductory program at 9:15 a.m. for the students. Local trial court judges will offer essential background information on Law Day and the Nebraska court system, putting the argument session in context for the students.

Whether held in the Supreme Court courtroom or outside of the State Capitol, all argument sessions are open to the public.

Students and members of the public attending will have the opportunity to witness the legal system in action and deepen their understanding of the appellate court processes.
