Neligh — Marjorie Ann Beed, 89, of Neligh, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023 at Arbor Care Center in Neligh, surrounded by her family.

Visitation was held Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023 at the Neligh Faith Community Church in Neligh.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 18, 2023 at the church in Neligh. Pastor Bruce Phillips officiated.

Burial was in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Neligh.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Clearwater was in charge of the arrangements.

Marjorie was born on a farm in Holt County, near O'Neill, on Feb. 26, 1934, and died at Arbor Care Center in Neligh on Dec. 13, 2023, surrounded by family. 

Marjorie was the fifth of six children born to Dietrich "Dick" and Edna Jane (Harding) Huebert. Her baby brother Dick was born less than two years later, just six weeks before the death of their father in January 1936. Her mother was left to raise six children including a six-week-old baby and a toddler under two.  

They had to move from their home the following March as they were unable to continue farming the land. They moved to another farmstead in the area and continued to live in the country where they raised chickens and a garden. Marjorie and her brothers and sister attended a country school.

When she was nine years old, the family moved into O'Neill and she attended O'Neill Public Schools where she graduated in 1951.

Marjorie worked in the local dime store during her high school years. After graduation, she was employed by Bell Telephone Company in O'Neill as a telephone operator.

She met her future husband William “Bill” Beed on a blind date in June 1951. A few months later, after Bill received his draft notice, he proposed and the couple was married Feb. 16, 1952, at the Wesleyan Methodist parsonage in O'Neill.

When her new husband left for United States Marine Corps boot camp at San Diego, CA, three weeks after the wedding, Marjorie stayed in O'Neill with her mother and brother. The couple moved to Quantico, VA, then to California, where he was stationed at Camp Pendleton near Oceanside. Marjorie transferred her employment to Southern Bell Telephone Company in Oceanside.

Their oldest daughter was born in 1953. Marjorie and the infant moved back to O'Neill until Bill's discharge in March 1954. They then moved to a farm on “the Willow,” northeast of Neligh, and welcomed three more daughters and a son.

Marjorie was a busy mother and homemaker and assisted Bill on the farm. She went to work as a nurse's aide at Keahaven nursing home in 1980, where she was a CSM and kept up the certification until she resigned after 21 years in 2001.

She was a member of Crawford Valley United Methodist Church southwest of Plainview for more than 65 years, serving in many official capacities; was an active member of the church's Women's Society, holding nearly every leadership position multiple times; and taught Sunday school and Bible school. 

She was a member of the auxiliary unit of the Plainview VFW chapter, the Willowdale Homemakers Club and served on the Willow Township election board for many years.

She was a 4-H sewing leader and helped many members of the Kountry Kids 4-H Club with their 4-H fair projects.

Marjorie was an accomplished seamstress and did beautiful embroidery work. The most admired and treasured handiwork though, were her hand-quilted quilts. She made each grandchild a baby quilt and each received a bed-sized quilt when they graduated from high school. She enjoyed cooking large family meals and was a skilled baker.

Marjorie is survived by one son Michael (Janet) Beed of Clearwater; four daughters Sandra Schroth of Brunswick, Victoria (Walter) Richart, Tamera (Michael) Kester and Patricia (Terry) Smith, all of Neligh; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Betty Bossard of San Deigo, CA and Beverly Martin of Lowell, MA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.   

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband in September 2020; a son-in-law,Larry Schroth; a sister Marion (Art) (Fluckey) Klein; four brothers Ronald (Ruth) Huebert, Harold (Barbara) Huebert, Dale (Shirley) Huebert and Dick (Joyce) Huebert; two brothers-in-law Marvin Fluckey and Gary Martin; and one sister-in-law Barbara (Delbert) Wood.
