The O'Neill Girls Track and Field Team hosted their own invitational on Tuesday, April 12. The Lady Eagles again battled about every type of weather condition you can imagine on the day to finish in fourth place.

Leading the way for O'Neill again was senior Zelie Sorensen. Zelie battled some stiff competition in Emily Penne from South Sioux City, to turn in some of her best times of the year. Zelie sprinted to a second place finish in the 100, 200 and 400 Relay. Her 200 time of 26.05 was her season best and puts her in the top five in Class B in Nebraska currently. The 4 x 100 team of Zori Koehler, Presley Heiss, Minlu Liu and Sorensen clocked their best time of the year, 53.03 to earn the silver medal.

Heiss continues to shine in the sprints as well. Presley sprinted to a new season best time of 27.41 in the 200 to place fourth in a very competitive field. She also finished in fourth in the 100 with a time of 13.54. Fellow sophomore, Ashley Dickau, also had a great day on the track. Her time of 13:21.92 is a season best and placed her fourth. Zori Koehler also added to the medal count. Besides placing in the 400 relay, she also finished sixth in the 100 high hurdles.

In the field events, O'Neill had some good finishes. Ashley Pischel continues to do well in the high jump placing third with a jump of 4-8. The vaulters had a fine day as well. Zelie equaled her best vault of the year, 9-6, to finish in second place. Freshman, Brooklyn Cahoy, reached new heights with a personal best by clearing 8-0 to finish in sixth.

Minlu Liu continues to do well in the triple jump. Despite poor weather conditions, she kept 31-03.50 to claim the fourth place medal.

“It was nice to get this meet in despite the challenges in the weather. I thought our girls battled the elements well without complaint and turned in some good performances. We were really glad to see a quality Class B team like South Sioux City at our meet to give us another look at where we need to be to compete at that level and I thought we stepped up and did just that. We look forward to seeing another talented field at the Dave Gee Invite at Grand Island Northwest High School on Thursday, April 21,” remarked Head Coach Mike Peterson.
