Last week, the pressure was on when the St. Mary's Lady Cardinals competed in Sub-District play. The girls managed to keep their cool and played well. On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the Cardinals hosted CWC and brought them crashing down. From the beginning, the Cards took the lead. They started the match with a hefty 17-6 opener. In quarter two, the Renegades bit back, bringing the score to 28-22, with the Cards still having the advantage. The Cards didn't leave room for error in the third stanza, downing the Renegades 7-0. By the end, the Cards were up 32 points, giving them the advantage they needed to move on further Pyper Ickes scored high with 17 points and six rebounds, Gracie Williamson was close behind with 15 points and eight rebounds, Adyson Peterson had 12 points, Annabelle Barlow had five, Lily Bauer two, Emerson Mlnarik had four rebounds and Olivia Bauer had one steal. SMH 17 11 7 16 51 CWC 6 16 0 7 29 A couple of days later, on Feb. 20, the girls returned to the stage to host Santee in the Sub-District finals. The Cardinals pulled ahead early, taking a 10-point lead. The Warriors upped their play and managed a 15-13 second stanza over the Cards. Still up by six points going into the third, the Cards didn't have much to fear. However, The Warriors wanted to give the Cardinals a little scare before the match ended. In the third, the girls fell behind by a further point. Soon enough, the Cardinals bounced back and brought the spotlight back on them with a decisive 20-12 to end the game 58-43 overall. Williamson led the team with 21 points and had nine rebounds. Peterson and Ickes both sunk 16 points, Barlow had four points and 10 rebounds, Mlnarik one point and Bauer two rebounds. They will face a 16-8 Stuart Broncos team to decide who will advance to State. The game will be held at St. Mary's High School, and KBRX will be broadcasting it at 6 p.m.
