Chambers — Keith Eugene Halsey, 84, of Chambers, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024. Visitation was held Monday, Sept. 9, 2024 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill with a prayer service. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024 at Chambers Community Church of Christ in Chambers. Memorials may be made to the family for future designation. Keith was born at home on April 8, 1940 to C. Eugene and Zelma (Lingenfelter) Halsey near Chambers. Keith often rode his horse to attend country school northeast of Chambers through the eighth grade and graduated from Chambers High School in 1957. He received his welding certificate after high school and then continued to work with his dad on the ranch. He met Hazel Shaul through some mutual friends of theirs. They got married in Bassett on Dec. 23, 1962. Keith then worked at Sandhill Equipment in Bassett, and they lived in a small trailer approximately 23 miles south of Bassett next to the school where Hazel was teaching. They moved back to the ranch at Chambers in May of 1963. To this union six children were born Sharlene, Wayne, Charles, Scott, Sharon and Gary. After moving back to Chambers, Keith worked alongside his dad. Keith milked cows, started his cattle herd, was always willing and ready to help his neighbors and was very handy with a knife at many brandings. He was on the Shamrock Township Board and also a 4-H leader for many years. Keith enjoyed playing games with his family and also enjoyed watching them rodeo and play sports. One of his pastimes was deer hunting, and he occasionally liked to travel. Two things he often said was that what he did was not work because he enjoyed what he was doing, and that he was a jack of all trades, master of none. In later years, Keith didn't retire, he just eventually slowed down. Lately, you could often see Keith and Hazel side by side enjoying the countryside riding in their side by side. They journeyed through life always together side by side. Keith passed away peacefully after a brave, hard fought battle with cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024 at his home with family by his side. Keith is survived by his wife Hazel of 62 years; four children Sharlene (Kevin) DeKay of Chambers, Charles Halsey of Kansas City, MO, Sharon Halsey of Aurora, CO and Gary (Tracy) Halsey of Chambers; one daughter-in-law Amy Halsey of Chambers; six grandchildren Sarah (Reid) Badje, Leanne DeKay, Travis (Sadie Heckert) Halsey, Tory Halsey, Chase Halsey and Sage Halsey; three great-grandchildren Red Badje, Ruger Badje and Ruby Badje; one sister Jennie Read of O'Neill; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons Wayne Halsey in 1986 and Scott Halsey in 2009 and one brother-in-law Dick Read.
