Atkinson — John "Jack" Leo O'Connell, 88, of Atkinson, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2022 at Parkside Manor in Stuart. Visitation was held Friday, Nov. 25, 2022 at Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson with a rosary. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson. Fr. Ross Burkhalter and Deacon MJ Kersenbrock officiated. Music was provided by organist Jayne Fetherston and soloist John Madsen. Pallbearers were Ryan O'Connell, Tim, Jerry, Mike and Barb Laible and Kim Neemeyer. Burial was in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson with military rites provided by the Atkinson American Legion Farley/Tushla Post No. 86. Memorials may be made to the family for future designation. John “Jack” was born in Emmet on Feb. 8, 1934 to John and Ruby (Kenny) O'Connell. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Sept. 15, 1952 and was discharged on Aug. 31, 1973 after serving 21 years. He was the mayor of Atkinson from December of 1982 until December of 1986. Jack was also owner/operator of O'C Locksmith's for many, many years. Jack is survived by his sister Minnie Laible of Atkinson, his brother Joseph (Pam) O'Connell of Norfolk and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mercedes Long and a brother-in-law Leonard “Pat” Laible.
