Jean Backus

Ord — Jean Backus, 97, of Ord, died Sunday, March 6, 2022 at Arbor Care of Ord.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2022 at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2022 at the funeral home in Burwell. Pastor Alan Peterson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Chambers Cemetery in Chambers.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Jean was born July 14th, 1924 at Norfolk to Arthur and Mamie (Ayers) Hans. She was raised on the family ranch in northeast Garfield County, which was homesteaded thru the Kinkaid Act by her father in 1911. She was very proud of that fact.

Jean received her education at District 26 and from her mother Mamie who was a school teacher. She graduated eighth grade.

Jean and Louis Wetzel Backus were united in marriage in 1947 after he returned from the military.

Jean loved ranch life and spent almost her entire life on the family ranch. She loved her horses and showing them off and her cattle, and she became attached to every dog she had through her life. She loved rodeos and seldom missed the Burwell rodeo.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wetzel who passed away in September 1989, her parents and an older sister Marie who passed away at birth.
