Gloria "Glo" Schmuekcer

Atkinson — Gloria "Glo" Anna Schmuecker, 84, of Atkinson, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022 at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill as a result of failing health.

Memorial visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022 at Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson with a 7 p.m. rosary.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, 2022 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson. Frs. Ross Burkhalter and Luke Steffes will officiate. Music will be provided by organist Terri Vrooman and soloist Bonnie Krysl.

Urn bearer is Corey Schaaf.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Gloria was born Jan. 6, 1938, to Harvey and Olive (Riley) Wahl in the back bedroom of her grandfather Fred "Christian" Wahl's home in Atkinson. 

Glo attended Atkinson Public Schools, where she received her K-12 education and graduated in May 1955.She later attended The Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha, where she studied business. Glo enjoyed shorthand and became proficient at writing 220 words per minute. After writing in shorthand, she would then dictate back to the typewriter. 

On Oct. 27, 1955, Gloria married Ed Schmuecker at Lake Manawa, Iowa. They were married for 59 years and to this union four children were born. 

Glo was a homemaker for most of her early married life, where she enjoyed golfing, camping with her kids, bowling, racing stock cars and playing pinochle/bridge card club. 

Glo's part-time job was as an Avon sales representative through the beautiful Sandhills south of town. After her kids were grown, Glo worked for Ray and Bonnie Schaffer for 11 years at the Someplace Else Bar. In 1989, she started working at Atkinson Elementary as a para-educator and retired in May 2007. Glo talked about "her kids" for many years, even after retirement; they all held a special way with her. 

After retirement, Glo enjoyed knitting blankets and dishrags to pass the time.   

In May 1976, Glo and her Dick's IGA team loaded up on a charter bus and traveled to Denver, CO, to compete at the National Bowling tournament. In May 2019, Glo competed in her last Nebraska State Bowling Tournament in Norfolk, where she was honored and recognized for her 50 years of bowling. She was honored with an anniversary clock that she took great pride in. One of Glo's major accomplishments was earning a "600 Club" membership. 

Glo was an avid reader, reading multiple newspapers every day. If anyone had a question on Atkinson's history, Glo was one that many would call upon. 

She enjoyed travels on a Caribbean cruise and a tour of Europe with her family. 

Glo's TV was constantly blaring, whether she was watching her soap, nightly game shows of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune or her Cornhuskers. At times she may have been cheering (or was it coaching) those Blackshirts on at a volume higher than her TV would sound. 

Glo is survived by Rod (Patty) Schmuecker of Atkinson, Patti Schaaf (special friend Harry Zulkoski) of Ord, Michele (Todd) Stoltenberg and daughter Sheryl (Rod) Fix, all of Atkinson, 11 grandchildren, two special honorary German foreign exchange students, 23 great-grandchildren with a new arrival next month, one brother Gene (Sharon) Wahl of Omaha and one sister Marilyn Haas of West Point. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother A.H. "Pete" (Beverly) Wahl, one brother-in-law Kenny Haas, one grandson Sgt. Jacob S. Schmuecker, one great-grandson Traydon Edward Tobias and one great-great-granddaughter Bristol Ray Fix.
