Gary E. Hoffman

Gary Earl Hoffman, 75, of O'Neill, died Monday, April 7, 2025 at Avera McKenna Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Visitation was held Thursday, April 10, 2025 at Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 11, 2025 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Atkinson.

Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Atkinson with military rites provided by the Atkinson American Legion Post No. 86.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Gary was born on Dec. 28, 1949 to Edward "Duke" and Dorothy (Frickel) Hoffman in Atkinson. Joining an older brother Roger Hoffman. Gary grew up in Atkinson and was active in FFA, football, track and basketball until he graduated in 1968. Following graduation he attended Big Equipment school in Buffalo, Texas. 

In January of 1970 Gary enlisted in the United States Army and was deployed to Germany. 

Gary married Janet Kay Ogden on Nov. 19, 1973 in Burke, SD. To this union three children were born Troy, Tami and Trent. Gary and Janet raised their children in Atkinson while Gary worked for National Farms and Frickel Farms before working for Tim Petersen until 2001. 

Gary was known for his extensive knowledge of John Deere tractors and balers. In 2001 Gary and Janet moved to O'Neill where Gary started working at Kracl Equipment/Plains Equipment until his retirement in 2016. 

Gary's retirement was full of camping, gardening, fishing, hunting and ice fishing. If he wasn't fishing or hunting he was attending his grandchildren's numerous school events. Gary didn't like to miss a thing! He attended numerous Boyd County Spartan events cheering on his grandchildren Mason, Alec and Chloe. He loved to take his great-grandsons Justin and Jacob for rides around the block on his lawn mower. Gary enjoyed driving to Yankton, SD to spend time with his great-grandchildren Mary, Sofiya, Roman and Chrystopher. 

Gary devoted the last few years of his life being the primary caregiver of his wife Janet, who suffers from advanced Alzheimers. 

Gary is survived by his wife Janet Hoffman of O'Neill; three children Troy (Jackie) Hoffman of O'Neill, Tami (Clem Jr. ) Disterhaupt of Spencer and Trent Hoffman of O'Neill; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one brother Roger (Mary Jo) Hoffman of Atkinson.
