The Son's of The American Legion, the American Legion and the O'Neill Fire Department held a flag burning ceremony last Tuesday, June 14 evening at the empty lot at 7th and Douglas. The American Legion passed a resolution in 1937 regarding what steps should be taken in appropriately disregarding an unserviceable flag. The resolution states "The approved method of disposing of unserviceable flags has long been that they be destroyed by burning." The U.S. considers its flag to be so sacred that burning it in a disrespectful manner is considered disgraceful to the flag's honor. This is why the annual flag burnings are taken so seriously, and handled with such dignity and respect. U.S. flags are burned when they are considered "unserviceable." In other words, they are not in adequate condition to appropriately represent the country anymore.
