Eagles Take Fourth At Mid State Conference

The O'Neill Eagles played in the Mid-State Conference Tournament this past week. The Eagles defeated Pierce on Tuesday, Feb. 2 43-36 and then fell to Wayne on Thursday 53-42 and were edged out of third place by Hartington Cedar Catholic Saturday losing 63-59.

In the game against Pierce the Eagles matched up with the Blue Jays and traded baskets most of the first half tying 19-19.

The Eagles out scored the Blue Jays by five in the third and added another two points for the seven point win.

Landon Classen had 25 points, shooting 10 of 14 for 71 percent and five of five from the charity stripe. Landon had four rebounds and two steals; Drew Morrow 10 points, five rebounds and one steal; Keaton Wattier four points, six rebounds and two steals; Brady Sidak two points and five rebounds; and Sean Coventry two points, four rebounds and two steals.

On Friday the Eagles played Wayne and lost by 10 points 53-42. Eagle Landon Classen got his 1,000th point during the match.

The Eagles played the Blue Devils tough trailing by 29-23 at the half.

The Eagles out scored Wayne in the third but only by three and trailed 35-32 at the end of the third. The Wayne offense laid into the Eagles in the fourth and out scored the Eagles by eight.

Classen racked up 19 points on the night and one rebound; Sidak nine points and three rebounds; Morrow six points, two rebounds and one steal; Wattier five points, nine rebounds and one steal; Sean Coventry two points and three rebounds; Kyler Dean one point and one rebound.

On Saturday, the Eagles got edged out of third place in the Mid-State Tourney by Hartington CC losing 63-59.

Both teams played tough as this was their second meeting with the Eagles falling close in that one, 51-49.

At the half, the Eagles trailed 22-18.

Hartington CC kept on top in the third putting up 19 points with the Eagles keeping pace with 16.

The Eagles grabbed the win in the fourth putting up 25 points falling short by two buckets.

Classen again put up solid numbers with 24 points with five of 12 in three-pointers for 42 percent and four of six in two-pointers for 67 percent. Landon had 11 rebounds and one steal; Morrow 15 points, two rebounds, and two steals; Wattier 12 points and seven rebounds; Sidak six points and one rebound; and Coventry two points.
