Last Thursday, Sept. 8 the O'Neill Eagle Cross Country competed against 16 other schools at the Norfolk Catholic Invitational. The girl's team placed fourth and the boy's team finished 12th. The girl's team ran well. They were one point away from being in the top three. Leading the Eagles were Taya and Ashley Dickau. Freshman Taya Dickau placed ninth, and Ashley Dickau placed 13th. Finishing out the varsity team was Yoselin Cayax 30th, Nahomi Sunum 38th, Molly Corkle 49th and Lauryn Dusatko 61st. In the junior varsity division, Hailey medaled, placing eighth, which helped the team place third. Other Lady Eagles were Giovanna Aguilar 12th, Cyrese Brown 16th, Paola Vergara 17th and Kassy Espinoza 18th. “All the Lady Eagles improved this week. I really thought they did a great job competing in the second half of the race,” said coach Hilker. The boy's team placed 12th. Running varsity were Trevor Alder 24th, Kullen Kartella 40th, Mikah Raymond 54th, Elijah Kopecky 65th, Logan Bradshaw 69th, and Kyler Dean 75th. The rest of the team ran in the junior varsity division. The Eagles placed sixth. Medaling for the Eagles was Gus Laible, placing eighth. The rest of the team was Brandon Romero 26th, Tyler Diediker 30th, Tomas Arciniego 31st, Eden Calvo 32nd, Carter Hickey 35th, Caleb Laursen 36th, Josue Jimenez 43rd, Ashton Burival 46th and Gant Dusatko 49th. “The team ran better in the middle and end of the race. Our first thousand meters needs to be stronger. The first 60 seconds of a race determines a lot. I feel this team can still improve a lot,” said Coach Hilker. The junior high also competed. The boy's team placed eighth, and the girl's team did not have enough athletes compete that day to have a team score. The boys placed as follows: Evan Cole 35th, Ethan Sukup 53rd, Alex Otte 63rd, Cooper Cole 74th, Sawyer Strong 79th, Gavin Kruse 84th, Liam Kennedy 95th, Alex Nelson 103rd and Caleb Asche 106th. In the girl's race, Addison Zuraff placed 48th, Emma French 63rd and Grace Mitchell 65th. Next week the O'Neill Eagles will host their own invitational Sept. 16th. Fifteen schools will be competing in the invitational. It will be senior parent's night. Races will start at 3:30 p.m.
