The O'Neill City Council met in regular session on Monday, Oct. 2 with all members present except Tim Gleason. The council discussed the addition of a new Welcome to O'Neill Sign to be put up on the north end of town on ground owned by Randy Hupp. Rich McIntosh representing the O'Neill Chamber Ambassadors asked that the city draft legal documentation for placement on the property like it has in place for the other signs on the west and east sides of town. McIntosh also asked that the city would at some point consider the upkeep of the mowing and trimming around the signs so the property owner doesn't have to. Lauri Havranek with the Chamber of Commerce asked the council about closing Douglas street from Eighth Street to Madison Street on Friday, Dec. 1 for the Home Town Christmas celebration. The council took care of approving five LB840 requests for improvements before moving on to replace Steve Dennis who had resigned from the O'Neill Airport Authority. The council replaced Dennis with Jesse Havranek of O'Neill. The council approved the move of the O'Neill Police Station to the vacated Golden Age Center after the property is remodeled for their needs. Members of the council wondered if they were moving too fast on their decision which has been discussed for the past couple of months. Councilwoman Buffy Walsh voiced her concern that the city was possibly rushing into putting the police station at that location. People had voiced to Walsh that it could maybe be used as a smaller social venue. Police Chief Matt Otte was asked if he thought the new facility was adequate for the department's needs. Otte said that he thought that after the renovations it would be a good fit for the department. The council approved the move with two no votes and then moved on to approving the funding for the remodeling of the Golden Age Center before adjourning for the evening.
