Cards Take NVC Title

The St. Mary's Cardinals had a successful week in the NVC tourney laying waste to Summerland 75-33, and then facing Elkhorn Valley downing them 52-48. The Cards took on the EPPJ Wolfpack in the final and beat them 57-44 for the NVC Title.

The Cards felt out their opponent and trailed the Wolfpack as they took an early lead going up 9-4 with 3:43 in the first quarter and the Cards got within a bucket before the quarter end.

The Cards played catchup in the second trailing 9-8 at 6:39 in the second. With 2:10 left in the half, the Cards went up 21-20. Then closed out the half with an eight-point run to regroup in the locker room leading 29-21.

The Wolfpack continued to fight into the third hitting three's and making points under the bucket to trail at the end of the third 32-28. With 2 minutes left the Wolfpack's efforts proved successful tying the game 32-32.

Both squads wanted the win as the lead turned over numerous times in the fourth. With four minutes left the score was still all knotted up at 42.

The Cards went on an eight-point run over the Wolfpack to lead and ran the clock out on Elgin Public/Pope John for the 57-44 win.

The Cardinals faced Elkhorn Valley on Thursday, Feb. 3 winning 52-48

The Cards played tough as did the Falcons on Thursday with each team keeping pace with each other.

The Cardinals managed to out score the Falcons in the second and third quarters which was just enough to seal the win.

Hedstrom had 28 points shooting nine of 19 for 47 percent in two-pointers, Aidan had 15 rebounds and one steal; Isaac Everitt eight points, three rebounds and four steals; Adam Everitt seven points, four rebounds and one steal; Tate Thompson six points, three rebounds and one steal; Blake Benson two points, three rebounds and three steals; and Charles Barlow one point and six rebounds.

The Cards faced the Summerland Bobcats in the first round of the NVC and easily won the match.

The big news of the game for the Cards was Aidan Hedstrom finished with another stellar offensive performance as he scored 22 points against the Bobcats putting him at 1,539 total career points which put him 21 points over the previous Cardinals all-time scorer, Adam Moon.
