The St. Mary's Cards hosted a young, inexperienced North Central Knights team last Friday in O'Neill, crushing them with the help of a running clock 66-20. The Cardinals' second team took control in the second half and played with the Knights. The Knights scored 20 against the Cards' second team. A 30-yard touchdown pass from Gage Hedstrom to Ben Barlow got the Cards going in the first quarter. Hedstrom hit Logan Brabec for the conversion to put the Cards up by eight. Hedstrom scored the next two touchdowns on a 54-yard punt return, and when the Cards drove into Knight's territory, he ran in a five-yard score. Jace Rosenkrans and Barlow converted the touchdowns. Hedstrom hit Brabec on a five-yard touchdown pass for the first score of the second quarter, with Risken Dawson getting the conversion pass; Rosenkrans got the next two touchdowns on a nine-yard and 41-yard run. Hedstrom took in a 74-yard interception for the next score, with Barlow catching the two-point conversion. Hedstrom ran a 71-yard touchdown to finish the half, with Brabec throwing the conversion pass to Barlow. Coach Allan pulled back the reins in the second half, with the bench seeing playtime. The Knights scored when Landon Stephen ran in a one-yard touchdown, followed by Cardinal Dalton Herley running in a score from the one-yard line. The Knights scored twice more on a 55-yard pass and on a one-yard score. The Cards ran 43 plays for 15 first downs and had one penalty for 10 yards, for a total of 301 yards of offense on the night. Hedstrom led the offense with five carries for 73 yards and two touchdowns; Rosenkrans had six carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns; Keigan Couch had seven carries for 32 yards; Drake Berg had four carries for 27 yards; Dalton Herley had one carry for a yard and one touchdown; and Myles Hamilton three carries for 16 yards. Leading the receivers was Barlow with two carries for 39 yards and one touchdown; Brabec with one catch for five yards and a touchdown; Risken Dawson with one catch for 23 yards; Drake Berg with one catch for 16 yards; and Ben Pongratz with one catch for 13 yards. Leading the defense was Berg with 19 tackles; Pongratz and Rosenkranas with eight tackles each; Hedstrom with six tackles; Hamilton, James Eby, Couch, Ruger Kraft and Herley with four tackles each; Seth Popkes had three tackles; Dawson had two tackles; and Barlow and Eli Banks one tackle each. The Cards will play Neligh/Oakdale in Neligh this week.
