Last week was a tough time for the OHS Volleyball team, facing up against seven other schools. The pressure must have gotten to them, and they couldn't seem to catch a break.

Their first match of the long week was against EPPJ Tuesday, Sept. 23. A lot of back-and-forth from both teams, but the Wolfpack were always just one step ahead of the Eagles. After having just getting served a loss by GACC the week before, the Eagles were faced to admit defeat once again to EPPJ 3-0; 25-23, 25-21 & 25-22.

Bergyn Classen was the MVP with 10 kills, four blocks and two digs; Blakely Sudbeck had seven kills, seven digs and two set assists; Taylor Young had five kills, three blocks, seven digs and one set assist; Autumn Jackson had five kills, three blocks and seven digs; Hannah Hilker had four kills, four ace serves, two blocks, 18 digs and 27 set assists; Mariah Kallhoff had three kills, two ace serves, two blocks, eight digs and one set assist; Hailey Fick had one ace serve, three digs and one set assist; Serena Chavez had 14 digs and one set assist; and Mia Lindsay had one dig.

A day passed by and the girls were back on the court, this time visited by the Wayne Blue Devils. This was another great match-up, with the Blue Devils striking first blood, and the Eagles starting a comeback later on. When it came down to it, however, the Eagles fell short and Wayne took the game 2-1; 25-18, 20-25 & 25-17.

Kallhoff led the offensive with nine kills, Classen had eight kills; Young had six kills; Hilker and Sudbeck had five kills; and Jackson had four kills.

Later on in the day the Eagles were pitted against Cedar Catholic. The opener looked promising, with the Eagles taking an early 25-15 victory. The Trojans started to turn things around when they stole the second set back. Both teams gave it their all, determined to take the finale. Both gave great efforts, but the Trojans pushed further and took the game in the end, 2-1; 15-25, 25-17 & 25-21.

Jackson took charge with eight kills, one block and three digs; Kallhoff had seven kills, five digs and one set assist; Classen had seven kills, one block and eight digs; Young had seven kills, eight digs and two set assists; Hilker had four kills, five ace serves, eight digs and 29 set assists; Sudbeck had four kills, eight digs and one set assist; Madelynn Kellum had one ace serve and one dig; Chavez had five digs and one set assist; and Fick had four digs and one set assist.

The team was given a short break before being thrust into the Girls Varsity Volleyball Tournament Sept. 25 at Elkhorn Valley.

Their first competitor was Battle Creek, whom they put up a good fight against. The Braves still overpowered the Eagles, swiping their first match 2-0; 25-21 & 25-17.

Kallhoff led with six kills and three digs; Sudbeck had six kills and one dig; Young had five kills, one ace serve and 10 digs; Hilker had two kills, one ace serve, one block, nine digs and 17 set assists; Jackson had two kills, one block and two digs; Chavez had one six digs and one set assist; and Fick had one dig.

After a slow start to the tournament, the Eagles were forced to face a tough 17-1 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge team. The Eagles fell short in the beginning, but made strides to catch back up. In a nail-biting second set, both teams were giving it their all, but the Bears managed to prove too much and took it 2-0; 25-16 & 26-24.

Sudbeck led the team with six kills, two blocks and six digs; Kallhoff had five kills, two digs and one set assist; Classen had four kills, two blocks and four digs; Jackson had three kills and two blocks; Hilker had one kill, one ace serve, nine digs and 14 set assists; Young had one kill, one block and two digs; Fick had one ace serve and three digs; Lindsay and Kellum had two blocks; Chavez had three digs and one set assist; and Raegan Kaufman had three digs.

The Eagles were having a rough go at it so far, and unfortunately, their next match wasn't much different. Once again the Eagles were taken down early on, but they weren't out of the game. They gave it one final push, but came up just short again. It was another close call, but the Knights came out victorious 2-0; 25-15 & 26-24.

Hilker was MVP with seven kills, one block, 12 digs and 12 set assists; Kallhoff had five kills, one block, two digs and one set assist; Classen had four kills and one dig; Jackson had two kills, one ace serve, one block and two digs; Sudbeck had two kills and four digs; Kaufman had one ace serve, four digs and two set assists; Lindsay had one block and one set assist; Chavez had eight digs; Fick had six digs and two set assists; and Kellum had two digs.

After a disappointing string of losses, the girls were finally given a break in the final match of the tourney. There they faced the Lutheran-Northeast Eagles and came away with a win.

From the beginning, the OHS Eagles pulled ahead, and kept the momentum going through the match. The girls were finally able to break free from their curse, and took their final game of the week 2-0; 25-19 & 25-16.

Kallhoff a led again with six kills, two ace serves, one block and three digs; Classen had five kills, one block and two set assists; Jackson had three kills, one ace serve, one block and four digs; Sudbeck had three kills, one block and four digs; Hilker had two kills, one block, 12 digs and 16 set assists; Lindsay had one kill and four blocks; Kellum had three ace serves; Fick had one ace serve and five digs; Chavez had eight digs; and Kaufman had five digs.

After a tough lot of games, the Eagles bring their record down to an even 9-9 on the season. With such a strong start to the year, the girls should have what it takes to climb their way back up.
