John Kozyra, CEO at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill, had received feedback that it would be nice to update the artwork in the hospital. Rather than use stock photos or prints, he decided to feature local artists. He approached Ranell Otte, K-12 art teacher at St. Mary's, in November about hanging some student work in the main lobby. John is a supporter of the arts and is also very committed to keeping the hospitaal a strong community partner.

Around 3,000 patients and visitors walk through the lobby of St. Anthony's hospital each month. Many of these patrons, as well as hospital and clinic employees, have a connection to St. Mary's, whether as alumni or as parents, grandparents or friends of families who attend there. Seeing artwork of students they know makes the space more meaningful.

Mrs. Otte was excited to make this proposal a reality. "Sharing my students' art with others is one of my favorite parts of teaching art. There is something extra special about seeing a piece of art matted, framed, and hanging on a wall for many people to enjoy."

Val Wecker, Director of Mission Services at St. Anthony's, became the liaison between St. Mary's and the hospital. After discussing the space and framing options, they settled on using black frames and white mats to create a gallery-type atmosphere. The uniformity helps tie together the vastly different pieces of art. A short description tag lets viewers know what the assignment was. Artwork will be rotated out each semester.

Currently on display are ten pieces in various media. The artists are Addy Shald, senior; Cooper Cole, sophomore; Londyn Reiser and Dane Asche, eighth graders; Mattie Olson, sixth grader; Aislynn Hoffman, fifth grader; Hodge Drueke, fourth grader; Huxton Kelly, third grader; Boone Sladek, second grader, and Abby Losing, first grader.
