The St. Mary's Cardinal football team traveled to Elgin last Friday with hopes of getting their season back on track and were successful coming away with a 68-28 win over the now 3-3 Elgin Pope John Wolfpack. The match started off with the Cards quarterback Gage Hedstrom breaking free on a 43 yard touchdown to put six on the board for St. Mary's. The Wolfpack responded by driving into Cardinal territory and Kellan Hoefer ran in from the eight yard line for their first six. The Cards got one more score in the first quarter when Hedstrom ran in from the 13 yard line to give the Cards a 12-6 lead. The second quarter was brutal for the Wolfpack with the Cards scoring 32 points. The Wolfpack scored first in the second on a four yard run by Grady Drueke and Taylor Beckman for EPPJ got the first extra points of the game. Hedstrom threw a touchdown to Risken Dawson on a 14 yard pass; Jace Rosenkrans bulldozed into the endzone on a three yard touchdown. Ben Barlow caught a 24 yard interception and ran it in for a touchdown and Hedstrom ran in the last score before half on a two yard dive into the endzone to lead the Cardinals 44-14. The Cards eased off in the third scoring only once when Hedstrom hit Barlow for a 55 yard score with Logan Brabec catching the conversion pass for two. The fourth quarter saw EPPJ score on a 12 yard run and a 26 yard touchdown pass. The Cards scored on a 55 yard touchdown pass to Barlow and Keigan Couch scored on a three yard run for the Cardinals. The Cardinals ran 42 plays for 15 first downs and had only two penalties for 10 yards. The Wolfpack ran 61 plays for 16 first downs and also had two penalties for 10 yards. Hedstrom led the Cards on the ground with 13 carries for 140 yards and three touchdowns; Rosenkrans had 10 carries for 62 yards and one touchdown; Couch six carries for 16 yards and one touchdown; Myles Hamilton one carry for three yards; Seth Popkes one carry for five yards and Brabec one carry for two yards. Barlow led the receivers with two catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns; Dawson two catches for 21 yards and a touchdown and James Eby one catch for five yards. The Cards had 224 yards of rushing and 136 yards from the air for 360 yards of offense. Leading the defense was Hedstrom with 16 tackles; Drake Berg 13 tackles; Barlow 10 tackles; Dawson eight tackles; Dalton Herley six tackles; Rosenkrans, Couch and Eli Banks each had four tackles; Hamilton and Ben Pongratz three tackles and Ruger Kraft, John Mlnarik and Remington Risinger one tackle each.
