Bulldogs Down Cards 68-52

The St. Mary's Cardinals will go into week five with a 1-3 record after falling to Creighton at home last Friday evening. The Bulldogs won the game 68-52 despite St. Mary's 30-28 lead at the half.

Cardinal quarterback Gage Hedstrom put the first two scores of the game on the board for the Cards with a 40-yard touchdown run, hitting Jace Rosenkrans for the two-point conversion. Hedstrom repeated the feat on a 33-yard run and again hit Rosenkrans for the two points to put the Cards up 16-6. The Bulldogs got on the board when Taylor Nilson ran in a four-yard touchdown.

The Bulldogs got hot in the second when Nilson drove in a score from the six-yard line.

The Cards answered when they drove down to the goal, and Rosenkrans ran in a one-yard touchdown. They then scored again with a 27-yard interception touchdown by Ben Barlow, followed by the conversion throw from Hedstrom to Barlow for 14.

The Bulldogs took their game to the air, and Nilson hit Jorgan Condon for a 50-yard touchdown pass and then hit Condon again for a 69-yard touchdown pass to bring the game within two points at halftime.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the third on a 25-yard touchdown by Robinson Ladeaux and a three-yard touchdown by Ethan Kulman. The Cards managed one score in the third on a 25-yard touchdown by Hedstrom.

The Bulldogs started to pull away in the fourth, with Nilson scoring thrice on a five-yard, 56-yard, and another five-yard rushing touchdown. The Cards scored twice on a two-yard touchdown run by Hedstrom, and then Hedstrom hit Barlow for a 55-yard touchdown.

The Cards ran 59 plays for 18 first downs and had six penalties for a 50-yard loss; the Bulldogs ran 75 for 26 first downs and had eight penalties for 62 yards.

Hedstrom led the Cardinals with 27 carries for 220 yards and four touchdowns; Rosenkrans had two for 29 yards, and Risken Dawson had six for five yards.

Barlow led the receivers with four catches for 86 yards and one touchdown; Rosenkrans one catch for one yard and one touchdown;  James Eby two catches for 50 yards; Eli Banks one catch for five yards; and Logan Brabec one catch for one yard.

The Cards had 440 all-purpose yards compared to the Bulldogs 635.

Hedstrom led the defense with 19 tackles; Dawson had 10 tackles; Drake Berg had nine tackles; Barlow had eight tackles; Rosenkrans had seven tackles; Banks had six tackles; Myles Hamilton had five tackles; Keigan Couch and Dalton Herley had four tackles each; Ben Pongratz had three tackles, and Ruger Kraft had one tackle. 

The Cardinals will face Ainsworth on Friday, Sept. 27, for homecoming. The game will start at 3:30 p.m.
