Creighton — Michael McKay, 81, of Creighton, formerly of Atkinson, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. Visitation was held Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024 at Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson with a rosary. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson. Fr. Bernard Starman will officiate. Music will be provided by soloist Bonnie Krysl and organist Terri Vrooman. Mike loved Nebraska football so feel free to wear Husker attire. Pallbearers will be Garrett McKay, Jorday Larsen, Evan Larsen, Tom Gragert, Tim Gragert and Kenny Kracht. Honorary pallbearers will be Marshall McKay, Lacey McKay, Kaylee Hauf, Stephanie Nebuda, Reagan Berner, Meghan Fernau and Mike's great-grandchildren. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Atkinson. Memorials may be made to the family for future designation. Mike was born to E.C. "Mick" and Maryellen (Miller) McKay on Oct. 18, 1942, in Snohomish, WA and passed away Sept. 19, 2024, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. Mike attended St. Joseph's grade and high school and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. As a child Mike loved baseball, slow pitch softball, hunting, fishing and golf with his two longtime friends Rollie Everett and Chuck Everett and Harley in his later years. He was a member of the Atkinson All Stars Team in the 1960's and 1970's and had many fond memories of the team and the time spent together. He also loved Nebraska football and was an avid fan of the Huskers. Mike married Carol Pacha on May 26, 1961, in Neligh. To this union four children were born Mike, Steve, Kris and Kurt. Mike worked for the Postal Service for 41 years in Atkinson, South Sioux City and Center. Mike and Carol enjoyed spending several winters in Mesa, AZ in their later years. Mike is survived by his wife Carol of Creighton, two sons Mike of Creighton and Steve (Rose) of Cumming, GA, one daughter Kris (Tom) Larsen of Davenport, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren with soon to be 12, two sisters-in-law Maxine (Lowell) Krieger of Atkinson and Jean Pacha of Atkinson, and one brother-in-law Lane (Bernie) Pacha of Papillion. He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Art and Dolores Pacha, one son Kurt, one brother Mark and two brothers-in-law Harold Krieger and Wayne Pacha.
