Lady Eagles Have Tough Week

Last week was a repeat of the previous for the O'Neill Lady Eagles, falling to two opponents and then taking out their third competitor.

First up on last week's list was Norfolk Catholic. They took an early 11-7 lead over the Eagles and knocked them down an additional three points in the second quarter.

Things were looking bad for the Eagles, but the Eagle's fate was sealed when quarter three was a repeat of the first. The final was the closest the Eagles ever got to winning, bringing it to an 11-point stalemate. The Knights took the win easy, 48-37.

Presley Heiss led the team with 11 points, shooting three of nine two-pointers for 33 percent. Heiss also had two rebounds and one steal; Olivia Young had six points, four rebounds and two steals; Hannah Hilker also six points, three rebounds and three steals; Autumn Hilker five points and three rebounds; Bergyn Classen five points, two rebounds and two steals; Lauryn Dusatko two points, five rebounds and one steal; and Ashley Sidak two points, four rebounds and four steals.

Two days later, the Eagles traveled to West Holt, and unfortunately for them, they didn't have a better experience than their previous match-up.

Quarter one ended with the Huskies keeping the Eagles to nine points while putting up 16 themselves. The next dug the Eagle's grave, falling 15-3. Now down 31-12, the Eagle's chance of victory was slim.

The third was another significant loss for the Eagles, trailing behind a further five points. Quarter four turned things around and gave the Eagles a solid 16-8 victory to lessen the gap between the scores. The Eagles still fell 49-33 despite this.

Olivia Young was the MVP with a16 points, shooting six of 11 two-pointers for 55 percent; Rylee Selby had five points and five rebounds. H. Hilker also had five points, three rebounds and two steals; Heiss two points, six rebounds and three steals; A. Hilker two points and three rebounds; Brena Gdanitz two points and one steal; Keeley Chavez one point, two rebounds and one steal; Sidak five rebounds and one steal; and Serena Chavez one rebound.

After another short two-day break, the Lady Eagles would face another opponent; this time, they would host Wayne.

The Eagles came out hot with an early 21-point first quarter, while Wayne staggered with just eight. It would only be downhill from there for the Eagles, however, as in the second they fell 7-4, but they were still comfortably in first place.

Quarter three was another three-point loss for the Eagles, but it did nothing to compromise their spot at the top. The final came close, with the Eagles taking another loss. Quarter one was such a game-changer that it carried the Eagles throughout the entire match and allowed them to get their first win of the week.

Hannah Hilker carried her team to victory with 21 points, shooting two of five three-pointers for 40 percent and six of 10 two-pointers for 60 percent. Hilker also had two rebounds and six steals; Young had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals; Sidak nine points, four rebounds and three steals; A. Hilker two points, two rebounds and one steal; Heiss one point, six rebounds and three steals; and Gdanitz one rebound.
