The Atkinson Community Foundation Fund (ACFF) recently donated $3,500 to the Atkinson Community Thrift Shop to assist with its new flooring project. This included replacing the older tile with new laminate flooring. The Atkinson Community Thrift Shop opened in 2021 and is located at 120 S. Main St. in downtown Atkinson. The non-profit retail charity organization includes eight volunteers Karen Thompson, Jeanne Krumwiede Janet Kliment, Linda Walton, Judy Hahne, Deb Leinenger, Lou Ann Tooker and Kim Dobias. The thrift shop donates the remainder of its proceeds to other nonprofit organizations in the community. A few of the entities who recently received donations from the thrift store include Atkinson Senior Center, Sturdevant-McKee Museum, Toys for Tots, and the Atkinson Hay Days community barbecue. Their current hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. To volunteer or donate, please call the Atkinson Community Thrift Shop at 402-925-2263. This is just one of six impactful gifts that the ACFF Advisory Committee recently voted on to fund in 2023. The Atkinson Community Foundation Fund is dedicated to the improvement of and long-term viability of the Atkinson community. A permanent endowment fund was established through which only the annual earnings are used for projects. As the endowment grows, so will the quality of life for families today and future generations. A volunteer Fund Advisory Committee works actively to increase charitable giving and award grants to worthwhile organizations that are addressing the emerging needs and future opportunities in our community. In February 2019, the Atkinson Community Foundation Fund announced that they had successfully raised $200,000 securing a $100,000 matching grant that increased Atkinson's community unrestricted endowment to $300,000. This was a 2:1 matching grant offered through the Rural Development Philanthropy Campaign and the matching funds were provided by The Sherwood Foundation. The fund's most recent donations have been awarded to: • Atkinson Thrift Store to assist with flooring • Atkinson Children & Families Coalition to offset costs for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program which gifts free books to children from birth to age 5. • Atkinson Children & Families Coalition to assist with its continued efforts on building quality and capacity focused on early childhood care.
