The O'Neill Girls Track and Field Team competed at the Dan Lennon Class B Indoor Meet on Tuesday, March 28th. With around 2,000 athletes competing from several states, the Eagles competed very well.
Leading the way for O'Neill was junior Minlu Liu who won the triple jump on her very last attempt of 32' 3.5. Sophomore Brooklyn Cahoy also competed well, placing second in the pole vault with a jump of 8-6, which equals her best from last year.
Junior Presley Heiss made it to the semi-finals in the 60m Dash with a fifth fastest all time mark of 8.40, but false started and failed to make the finals.
"I was very impressed with our results despite the fact we had not had many great practice days outside. We look forward to competing at Battle Creek on Tuesday and Broken Bow on Thursday."
The Dan Lennon Track & Field Invitational was held over the weekend at 54 schools from across the region competed. The meet was hosted by the University of South Dakota. Among the teams were the O'Neill Eagles Boys Track team, which took 21 athletes to the meet.
Although no team scores were kept, the boys gave it their all and had some impressive results. Kyler Dean placed 4th in the pole vault, while Tyler Diediker placed 4th in the long jump.
Other notable performances for the team included Pryor Mathews, who made it to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, and freshman Porter Mathews, who jumped 18' 2β.
When asked about the meet, Coach Hilker had this to say: βIt was a highly competitive meet that allows athletes to measure their skill set against others, and see what they need to work on.β
Next week, weather permitting, the O'Neill Eagles Track Team will travel to the Battle Creek Invitational Tuesday, April 4th. Field events start at 12:00 and running events at 2:30 p.m. Then Thursday, April 6th, the team will compete at the Broken Bow Invitational, field events start at 12:00 p.m., and running events at 2:30 p.m.
