Lynch — Darrel D. Ludemann, 89, of Lynch, died Monday, March 13, 2023 at Avera Sacred Heart Majestic Bluffs Nursing Home in Yankton, SD where he moved in January 2023.

Memorial services were held Saturday, March 18, 2023 at the Lynch Community Hall in Lynch. Jeff Hart officiated.

Burial will be held at a later date. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 228 and Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Brockhaus Funeral Home in Spencer is in charge of the arrangements.

Darrel, son of John F. and Anna M. (Bendig) Ludemann, was born June 24, 1933, in Boyd County, Nebraska. He was one of 12 children. Darrel attended Spencer Public School in Spencer.

He was married to Eileen V. Ertz on June 20, 1953, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Butte. Six children were born to them: Cynthia, Rodney, Roger, Julie, John and Tina.

Darrel spent two years in the U.S. Army and proudly served active duty as Private 1st Class SP3 in Supply.  He was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas, Ft. Lee, VA, and Ft. Hood, Texas.  He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal.

Following his time in the service, Darrel spent many years working construction on local projects and roads.  This led him to working in the power line industry during which he and Eileen moved West. He worked his way through the ranks and spent his remaining working years as foreman on various power line projects through the Rocky Mountains and around the country.

Darrel was known for his love of fishing and playing cards with friends and family. He was always the life of the party and knew how to have fun. He would rarely be seen without his cowboy hat and some of his grandchildren only knew him as Grandpa Cowboy. He adored spending time with all his grandchildren and often carried a surprise cookie in his shirt pocket.

Later in life he and Eileen escaped for regular visits to the casino where they played slot machines hoping to hit it big. Eventually he did and won the jackpot, a car, at the Fort Randall Casino. He continued to enjoy casino trips with family and friends whenever possible.

A constant companion during his later years was his Lhasa Apso dog named Pumpkin. He and Pumpkin resided independently at their home in Lynch for 13 years after the passing of his beloved wife Eileen.

Darrel  is survived by his five children Cynthia Nolan and Rodney (Deb) Ludemann, all of Lynch, Roger Ludemann of Montpelier, Idaho, Julie (Ralph) Hilsman of Brigham City, Utah and Tina (Steve) Mohrmann of Montpelier, Idaho; one brother Wayne (Lorraine) Ludemann of Fairfax, SD; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eileen Ertz Ludemann; an infant son John Frank Ludemann; his parents John and Anna Ludemann; three brothers Allen, Edward and Bob; seven sisters Doris, Norma, Laverne, Shirley, Rose Marie, Jane and infant sister Pearl; and one son-in-law Patrick (Tim) Nolan.
